Takeo Ishii (石井 健雄, Ishii Takeo, born May 3, 1947) is a Japanese yodeler. It is said he is the best known Japanese person in Germany, and for his work in German music, has received the Hermann Löns medal.

History[edit]

Ishii was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan.[1] Ishii was a loner in high school, and first heard yodeling on the radio[2] Following his father, Ishii went to university for mechanical engineering. In his spare time he became engrossed with the zither and the hammered dulcimer, and learned to play these instruments. Using Franzl Lang's records, he taught him self to yodel, and began performing on Japanese television. During a six-month period where he studied abroad in Germany[2], Ishii went to Switzerland, where he sang at a beer hall in Zurich.[1] From there he sang in front of Lang, his idol, and Lang took him under his wing. He performed on television with Maria Hellwig, and after that became known in German language circles as the "Japanese yodeler". He has since performed on television and in general public performances alone and with friends. Ishii has since been an eternal guest of Hellwig's circle.

As of late he has become a bit quieter. Through Stefan Raab's TV show "TV Total', he has become known to a younger audience.

Ishii met his wife Harriet in 1981 and proposed to her three years later at an onsen in Japan, where he yodeled his propsosal to her.[2] They married in 1985 and has four children.[3]
