Synopsis

[edit]

The Oven of Akhnai is a midrash that was introduced by Jewish sages within 200-600 ce.[2] It opens up with Rabbi Eliezer proclaiming that the majority has acquired more power than the minority, even if the minority, Rabbi’s like Eliezer, has showed evidence of Heavenly influence in their actions. The Torah is quoted by the Rabbis to argue that in the hands of the majority. Rabbi Eliezer is not blinded by the sages thirst for power, so he continues to reject their authority. The sages desire revenge on Eliezer and banish him from the community of the Torah. This action by the sages infuriated God and caused massive destruction on the land through Eliezer’s tears. God shows that when a man hurts another through evil actions, God listens and responds immediately.[3] God would rather a man “throw themselves into a fiery furnace, and let him not whiten the face of this fellow in public.[4]

Importance

[edit]

Scholar Jeffrey Rubenstein has argued that the Oven of Akhnai focuses on the fact that the majority need to take charge over the minority, but in a way that it is fair to all. The majority needs to work off the minority to attend the needs of everyone in the community. Yet, explains Rubenstein, the midrash says there is a limit to what the majority can do. People should not aim to cause someone to experience pain, but instead respect one another.
