Suzuki Bokushi (鈴木牧之) was a Japanese essayist (author of zuihitsu) in the Edo period.

Biography

[edit]

The Japanese zuihitsu writer known as Suzuki Bokushi was born on the 29th day of the first month in the 7th year of Meiwa (22 February 1770 in the Gregorian calendar),[1] in the area that is now Shiozawa in Minamiuonuma, Niigata.[2][a]

In his youth, he was known by the infanthood name [ja] Yatarō (弥太郎),[1] His true name in adulthood was Gisōji (儀三治),[1] and his haigō [ja] was Shūgetsuan Bokushi (秋月庵牧之).[1] The pen name Boku-shi was adopted upon his genpuku ceremony when he was in his sixteenth year,[1] taking the first character (牧) of his father's haigō Boku-sui (牧水).[1]

He died on the 15th day of the fifth month of the 13th year of Tenpō (23 June 1842).[1]
