John Gary Anderson[edit]
John Gary Anderson was the founder of the Anderson Motor Company.
Anderson was orphaned at an early age, moving to live with his grandfather. Unable to care for the boy, his grandfather got him a job working on a plantation for Iredell and Allen Jones.[1] Once he came of age, he left and moved to Rock Hill, taking a job as a clerk. By the time he was 19, he was making $25 a month, plus room and board.
Anderson Buggy Company[edit]
The Anderson Buggy Company was built by A.D. Holler, a Civil War veteran, who was also Rock Hill's only builder and architect for several years after the Civil War.[2] The buggy manufacturing company was incorporated in 1892.[3] At that time, an important Rock Hill businessman, James Milton Cherry became a major stockholder (and remained one until 1905).
