Ferdowsi
Background
[edit]Ferdowsi was born in Pazh, a large village near the city of Tus (present-day Mashhad), located in the Khurasan region.[1][2] His precise birthdate has not been documented, but based on his poems, it can be deducted that he was born in 940.[1] He belonged to a family of landholders (dihqan),[1] a class which had existed since the late period of the Sasanian Empire (224–651).[3]
