The Fraternity Grand Prix (en español: Gran Premio de la Hermandad) also known as Argentine-Chilean Fraternity Race (en español: Carrera de la hermandad argentino-chilena), is an annual competition held on the Big Island of Land of Fire (en español: Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego) every August, with the participation of race drivers from Chile and Argentina. It unites the Chilean locality of Porvenir with the Argentine locality of Rio Grande. It has been carried out uninterruptedly since 1974, even during the Beagle conflict that antagonized both countries in 1978.
Origins
[edit]In April 1974, the Governor Uros Domic of Tierra del Fuego (Chile) and Pedro Vukasovic, president of the Porvenir’s Steering Wheels Club (en español: Club de Volantes de Porvenir) , contacted the president of the Rio Grande Automobile Club (en español: Automóvil Club de Río Grande), Víctor Donoso, and they developed the idea.[1][2]
The date
[edit]A date was chosen in homage to the liberators of both countries, on August 17, for the death of San Martin and on August 20, for the birth of Bernardo O'Higgins. The date coincides with the winter season, ideal for the development of the rally, with snowy or muddy roads, which encourages the race drivers that are looking challenges.
The first held
[edit]It was played between August 15 and 16, 1974, starting from Porvenir at 07:00 am, Chilean time. Twenty daring race drivers started this adventure on very hard roads and with units that were far from being racing vehicles.
