The Manukau Sports Bowl, also known as the Velodrome, is a large park in Auckland, New Zealand. Consisting of 21.6 hectares (53 acres) of open land, the park is home to a greyhound racing track, an outdoor cycling velodrome as well as tennis and basketball courts.[1] This park is located in Manukau, South Auckland which sits on four distinctive rock groups, three of which occupy approximately on third of the area. The oldest rocks are the greywacke and argilite ones of early Mesozoic age, followed by marine sandstones and mudstones of mid-Tertiary age, soft pumiceous clay slits of Pleistocene age and the basaltic volcanic eruptions of the Auckland volcanic field.[2]
The park is home to the Auckland Greyhound Racing Club, which was the first club in New Zealand to install a sand/loam racing surface and also hosts a number of the Code's flagship races including Auckland Cup and the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Collar. [3]
