The International Scientific-Educational Center of NAS RA was founded in 1997 as an operating PhD-based department included in the Presidium of NAS RA. The main objective of ISEC is the preparation of scientific brainpower through PhD and Postdoctoral Studies. NAS research organizations and centres serve as basis for doing research where from 1997 to 2012 it was estimated that 918 PhD and 163 Doctoral students defended their theses. Taking into account scientific, technical and territorial potential of NAS RA, the International Scientific-Educational Center of NAS RA expanded its field of activity and raised its academic standards by organizing Master’s programmes in accordance with international standards for professional education. The organization of Master’s Studies in the educational system of NAS RA aims at quick and qualitative transition from education to science which fosters distribution of the appropriate departments within research organizations of NAS RA as well as helps Master’s students integrate fast into the scientific community and obtain relevant skills for scientific intellection. These initiatives target at tying up education and science, fostering youthening of the scientific potential in NAS RA and forming a new generation of scientists who keep abreast with the times. In accordance with modern style education requirements, the ISEC’s facilities and equipment is constantly replenished with computers and all the necessary technical stuff. Vaious academic institutions with their modern laboratory equipment are also involved in the promotion of educational programmes. One of the richest scientific libraries in Armenia, the Fundamental Scientific Library of NAS RA, is periodically enriched with modern and the latest literature which is always at ISEC students’ disposal. An electronic management system was also created with the view of coordinating the process of studies and research. Taking into account regional interest towards education, the ISEC NAS RA organizes Master and PhD studies for foreign and Diaspora students. Foreign Affairs Department of ISEC NAS RA promotes ISEC’s internationalization process and also coordinates international educational programmes. Series of agreements have been signed on cooperation and exchange programmes along with the leading foreign universities as well as Master programme on “Library and Information Sources” was developed and implemented in the framework of TEMPUS with a few foreign universities. Highly qualified academic and scientific staff of ISEC NAS RA plays an important role in the economic and socio-political life of Armenia. Little time has passed from ISEC’s foundation, but it can be asserted that ISEC is already a well established educational institution which undertakes a considerable part in the educational activities of NAN RA by participating in the recruitment and appointment process which mainly aims at skilled young personnel. During 1997 -2012 ISEC made huge progress through many achievements. The teaching staff of the Centre is regularly sent on business trips to the leading foreign scientific and educational institutions for upgrading their professional skills. The best scientists of NAS RA, academicians, correspondent members, PhDs and Doctors from different fields teach at Master Studies of the Center. There is also a good platform for distance learning at ISEC which makes it possible for the lecturers to plan their teaching material using the latest technologies. It also makes higher education flexible and professional basis deeper with the orientation towards contemporary scientific tasks. A lot of work is being done towards arranging online lectures and scientific conferences involving leading international research and learning centers. Monographs, manuals and numerous articles were published by the academic staff of the Centre. There are also 2 research groups in the Centre: “High–temperature superconductivity” and “Bioinformatics”. With the purpose of detection of the applied capabilities of High-temperature superconductivity of the ceramics a study on the specifics of the dispersion of the weak electromagnetic fields into the high-temperature superconductivity ceramics with the Josephson environment is being conducted. Research is being done on the creation of ultrasensitive magnetometers which can register weak electromagnetic fields (magnetic field of earth) where superconductive patterns with the Josephson environment work as a sensitive component. As refers to the “Bioinformatics” research group, they are dealing with computer chemistry using the method of the modern molecular dynamics. The purpose of the study is to detect dynamic structure and features of the molecular systems. The targets of the study are membranes of the biological cells, micelles, liquid-crystalline and also polymeric liquids. Up-to date professional software packages as well as packages developed by the ISEC’s specialists are used as a methodological basis for the research. A research group led by Shahinyan A. and Poghosyan A. was awarded by the President of RA for “Contribution in Development of Natural Sciences” in 2007. The results of the research done by the group of bioinformatics were published in the high rating international journals also in monographs published in Armenia and in the USA. The results of the researches from the last 5 years were presented at 15 scientific conferences, 25 articles and 3 monographs were also published. Since 2005 by the efforts of the ISEC’s NAN RA staff a quarterly popular science journal “In the World of Science” has been published, which covers all areas of science and technology,. Different scientific materials as well as the latest scientific achievements and progress are presented in the journal.
