Eric Black (born April 13, 1999)[1] is a professional Canadian football defensive lineman for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at Buffalo and Stony Brook.

Early life

[edit]

Black grew up in Rochester, New York and graduated from Rush–Henrietta Senior High School, where he was a team captain. He was selected to the 2016 All-Greater Rochester team and the All-County team.[2]

College career

[edit]

Buffalo

[edit]

Black joined the Buffalo Bulls in 2017 as a walk-on player before later earning a scholarship. He redshirted the 2017 season and played in one game as a freshman in 2018. In 2019, he played in 11 games as a rotational piece.[3] During the 2020 season, Black started seven games. In the 2020 Camellia Bowl, Black had a game-sealing sack in the final minute to ensure Buffalo's 17–10 win over Marshall.[4] Black was set to be the starting defensive end heading into his redshirt senior season in 2021, but he fell out of favor with the defensive line coach and was benched midseason.[3]

Stony Brook

[edit]

In 2022, Black transferred to the Stony Brook Seawolves for his final season, where he earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA).[5] He started every game at defensive end and had a career-high 19 tackles, seven for loss, five sacks and one forced fumble.[3]

Professional career

[edit]

Black earned a mini-camp invite from the New York Giants following the 2023 NFL Draft.[6]

Edmonton Elks

[edit]

Black signed with the Edmonton Elks on January 25, 2024.[7]
