Korgalzhynsky (Kurgaldzhinsky) State Natural Reserve (Kazakh:Қорғалжы́н мемлекетті́к табиғи́ қорығы́ ) is one of two Kazakh reserves that are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Saryarka object - the Steppe and the North Lake.
Korgalzhyn Reserve is located 130 km southwest of the city of Nur-Sultan. Created in 1968 to preserve the unique wetlands that are home to flamingos, curly pelicans and other birds.
Tengiz-Korgalzhyn lake systems are one of the most important wetlands for migratory birds in Kazakhstan and throughout Asia. In 1976, the wetlands of the Tengiz-Korgalzhyn system of lakes were included in the Ramsar list. In 2000, Lake Tengiz entered the Living Lakes international network, which includes the most unique lakes in the world.
The Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On some issues of expansion of the territory of the state institution“ Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve ”” dated December 18, 2008 No. 1183 extended the territory of the reserve to 284,208 hectares. The area of the Korgalzhynsky Reserve has officially amounted to 543,171 hectares (before expansion - 258,963 hectares). The expansion occurred due to the transfer of land from Korgalzhyn district of Akmola region and Nurinsky district of Karaganda region.
Most of the territory is occupied by salt and fresh water. The territory is a general system of a double lake: the flowing lake Korgalzhyn and the drainage lake Tengiz, connected to each other. Tengiz-Korgalzhyn lakes are not only the most extensive water area of the steppe zone, but also one of the most unique places on the whole Eurasian continent: here two major migration routes of birds intersect - Central Asian and Siberian-Southern European.
Since 1994, the pink pelican has been regularly found in the reserve. The nesting populations of flamingos and Savki are the largest in Central Asia.
