Pandit Anoop Mishra[edit]
Pandit Anoop Mishra was a Sanskrit laureate who contributed immensely to spread the Sanskrit knowledge. He was intellectually active in the first half of the twentieth century and resided in Uttar Pradesh for most part of his professional life. He touched many lives and made Sanskrit a popular medium for knowledge through his teachings and publications.
Early Life
Pandit Anoop Mishra was born in the year 1900 A.D and was the resident of Nagwas village in Madhubani (formerly Darbhanga), Bihar. He received his primary education in Sanskrit Tol Vidyalaya, Barhi, under the able and strict guidance of Pt. Rajbanshi Jha, who was highly respected and was referred as ‘Guruji’ by his students and the local community. Post his primary education, he went to a nearby village, Dumara, where he met Pt. Gangeshwar Jha, who was one of the best astrologers in Mithila in those days. Being highly impressed by him, Pt Gangeshwar Jha urged him to stay back as his disciple. Pt Anoop Mishra followed his advice and stayed back in Dumara for his for a few years. During his stay, Pt Gangesghwar Jha spotted a natural talent in him and further advised him to get enrolled in Government Sanskrit College, Beneres.
Education in Government Sanskrit College, Beneres
Pt. Anoop Mishra enrolled himself in Government Sanskrit College, Beneres for his formal education (now know as Sampurnanand Sanskrit University). He successfully pursued the education of ‘Archarya’, which is the equivalent for post-graduation. Being highly motivated by the science of Jyotish, he decided to study both Astronomy and Mathematics, something that required deep dedication and commitment to this field. He saw his inspiration in Pt Muralidhar Jha, who was the Head of Department of Astronomy and Mathematics and was also honored with the title of Mahamahopadhyay (the most learned). Pt. Anoop Mishra was conferred the degree of ‘Archarya’ with Gold Medal and honorary mention, something for which he was highly regarded by his mentors and peers.
Professional Career
Post his education, Pt Anoop Mishra wanted to spread his knowledge by reaching out to interested students. With that in mind, he joined Shri V.N. Mehta Adarsh Sanskrit College in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, as a Professor and also dedicated his life to research to author many highly inspirational and popular books. He was also the editor-in-chief of the most popular Maithili magazine, Mithila Mod, for seven years. Pt. Anoop Mishra had high respects for his ‘Guru’, Pt. Muralidhar Jha, and gladly accepted his request to move to Government Sanskrit College, Beneres, as a Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy. He continued teaching there till his demise on 7th November 1953. He was widely popular among his colleagues and is immensely respected by his students till date.
