Isabella Petrides 7B-Z Prisoners of War in Germany During the First World War, the amount of inprisoned soliders was a little over seven million, held by Germany.. They first started putting camps for the prisoners in Germany in 1914, about one hundred in all. Prisoners slept in hangars, or in tents, and dug holes to keep warm. The main foods they were fed were soup, and bread was replaced with KK Bread which had ingredients of potato flour, sawdust or ox blood. Prayer rooms were built for Christians, Jews, and Muslims, and religious practices were a big part of prisoners life. They used hair removal cream to ward off the spread of lice. Many people tried to escape, but only a few succeed. 313,400 escapes were counted for the war’s duration, 67,565 succeeded.^[1] Overall 2.4 million survived by the end of the war.^[2]
