Melissa Bailey (stage name Melissa B.), is an American singer, songwriter, and author.

Early life

[edit]

Melissa Bailey was born in Sumter, South Carolina.[1][2][3] She stated in an interview that as a youngster, all she wanted to do was sing.[4] Bailey is trained in classical opera.[4] She was raised in Japan, Germany, Hawaii and Virginia.[citation needed] She appeared as a contestant on the American Idol talent show during the 2005 season.[5]

Career

[edit]

Music

[edit]

Bailey has been working as a recording artist since 2013,[1] when she released the single "Addicted" via iTunes on July 23, 2013[6] under the stage name, Melissa B. Her second single, "What You Started," made its US premiere on November 12, 2013 on iTunes and across all digital platforms.[7] Bailey's third single, "Be Free," was released on Quantize Recordings with DJ Spen and produced by B. Howard in 2014.[8]

Melissa B. released the single, "Maria," in 2015.[9] She performed at New York's Carnegie Hall in October 2015 alongside Wouter Kellerman & Vincent Lyn[10]

Melissa B. was named one of the "TopTen R&B Artists to Look-out For" in 2016 from the UK magazine Fact Magazine.[11] She was featured in an article in Elmore Magazine that same year.[12] Melissa B. was credited as a songwriter and featured artist on Juan Cristiani's[who?] single "Dancing in the Rain," which topped the Billboard Charts Hot Single Sales in 2017.[13][14]

"Found" was her next single, released on EQ Distro in 2019.[15] On May 22, 2020, she released a new single "Back & Forth", on iTunes.[16] Her upcoming American EP, Flying Rivers, is in post production as of September 2020.[17]

Writing

[edit]

In 2018, her book Digitally Independent, which Bailey refers to as "...a self-help guide for the digital independent artist..."[citation needed] was published independently.[18]

"Combining voice and technology in our world today is not just singing, it is the combination of social media, wearable technology and augmented reality. In my world, I am, by day, a network engineer who loves designing computer infrastructure and learning how to improve communications with technology and people." —Music-Tech proponent, Melissa B.[4]

Music-Tech proponent and activism

[edit]

Melissa B. has incorporated the "...juncture of voice and technology..." into her music.[4] Citing her as both artist and activist in a 2016 article, Annie Dinerman of Elmore Magazine reported how "...Melissa encourages young women to seek careers in computer science and technology..."[12][4] Walton is co-founder of Girl Geek Dinners NYC, a non-profit organization formed to interest young women to go into IT fields.[4]

Technology journalist, Jefferson Graham, interviewed Melissa B. about her use of Google Glass in a 2013 USA TODAY article, describing her usage of Google Glass. In the article, Walton states she "...bought Google Glass to show fans her daily life writing and recording music" [19]
