Plot
[edit]Henrietta is about a girl a world where she is born and has the worst of all lucks. The moment she is born she loses her parents and is taken in by her aunt. She is forced by her aunt to marry a man she is not in love with, then she runs away to not have that marriage happen. Throughout her escape, she meets new people and befriended them, but then they betrayed her. In volume II, she stands up for herself and grows an inner persona and she gets a job that she does maid work. Then she gets accused of stealing a necklace, but she takes a stand on her own liberty. Towards the end of the novel, Henrietta’s brother ended up pursuing her own sister without knowing that she was his sister.
Characters
[edit]Henrietta, the main character, a girl born into the world with misfortune. Her aunt raised her up when her parents passed away. In volume I, she is characterize as a woman of bad luck and she was searching for a love and see if she can find someone good. Miss Woodby, friend of Henrietta, She is caring and seems to be a two-sided persona. She worries about Henrietta and makes sure she gets the best lodge from her friend, Mrs. Eccles. However, she is two-sided because it is shown through how she betrayed Henrietta and told everyone about her problem and made things worse for Henrietta. Mr. Damer, Henrietta’s guardian, he is a genuine man that is there to protect Henrietta from the people that may be a threat to her.
Structure of Novel
[edit]The structure of this novel is like building a weak character into a strong character at the end. The novel starts off with a background, setting, and problem. Then the problem reaches a climax and then reaches it high peak and goes down a hill to the resolution of the novel. The narrator’s voice is relating her own life and placing her own opinion into the novel. The narrator emphasizes parts of the novel that relates to her life and see how things go. The perspective of this novel focuses on feminism and how the main character grows a stronger inner self. This perspective also comes from growing stronger from the increase in betrayals that the main character encounters. The style of the novel is third person, how the narrator is there seeing everything and telling the story her own from her perspective of things that she sees it.
Theme
[edit]An important theme in the novel is betrayal. Ever since the beginning of the novel, Henrietta was betrayed by her aunt forcing her to marry a man she didn’t love and having her convert to a different religion that she didn’t want to change to. Then, miss Woodby betrays Henrietta’s trust by telling everyone Henrietta knows about what happened between her and her aunt. Then, there is another part where Henrietta becomes a pimp for her when she just found out that he was her brother.
