Emiliano Rodolfo Rosales-Birou (born April 8th 1990), better known by his online alias Chuggaaconroy, is an American producer of Let's Play videos on that are watched on YouTube.[1] Currently, Chuggaaconroy has over 900,000 subscribers on his channel with over 700,000,000 views from his videos altogether. [2]

Personal Life and Living

[edit]

Chuggaaconroy born Emiliano Rodolfo Rosales-Birou, now twenty-five years of age, has made a modest living for himself playing video games and making videos for his YouTube channel known as Let's Plays. He rents an apartment in Atlanta and lives off making his videos since it is his only source of income. He benefits from YouTube's Partnership Program, which allows eligible users to make money through Google Adsense, which runs advertisements with the user-generated videos. Chuggaaconroy gets the profits from 55% of the ad that is played, which can vary from different amounts depending on the kind of ad, its price and how often the ad and video is viewed. While members of the partnership program are not allowed to disclose their income, back when Chuggaaconroy had around 750,000 subscribers (people who are alerted when he uploads a video) it was estimated that his annual income was roughly $62,000.[3] Since then, he has gained over 200,000 subscribers and may be making even more.

Getting started on YouTube

[edit]

Chuggaaconroy's first YouTube video was uploaded on March 16th 2008 and was a boss run on Very Hard difficulty in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. [4] His first Let's Play video was uploaded ten days later, March 26th 2008, for one of his favorite games, EarthBound.[5] He felt that comfort for a game that he played "six...eight times" but still admits that his first video "starts off bad" and how the series was "a little slow in the beginning, but gets better." Chuggaaconroy often cites that watching Let's Play videos in 2007 produced by Jonathan "ProtonJon" Wheeler to be what got him interested in trying to start his own Let's Plays.[6] Chuggaaconroy started his hobby of uploading Let's Play videos at the time when those types of videos were beginning to get popular in 2006 when they appearing as just screenshots of games with text on the forums of Something Awful. [7] Chuggaaconroy has expressed that he regrets doing one of his most favorite games first since he feels that now he could do a much better job in terms of quality due to his experience in making videos now. [8]

Channel Format

[edit]

Chuggaaconroy's videos are not scripted shows like Red vs. Blue and he is not a video game critic or aiming to be competitive either.[9] His videos are called "Let's Plays", a popular phenomenon that involves people playing through games with commentary about the game in a walkthrough form. The difference between text walkthroughs and Let's Play videos is that the commentary in the videos may not have to always relate to what is going on in the game, since the commentator also has to keep the viewer's attention during the video.[10] Compared to other Let's Play channels like PewDiePie or Achievement Hunter, Chuggaaconroy's channel is structured through series of videos that focuses his uploading schedule to one game at a time. Currently, Chuggaaconroy has 28 playlists for Let's Plays done by himself and is a part of 17 collaboration Let's Plays. [11] Unlike the much more popular PewDiePie, Chuggaaconroy and his content feature less swearing and goofing around, something that PewDiePie is known for. [12]

Other Work

[edit]

Chuggaaconroy also has a collaboration channel called "TheRunawayGuys" which he works on with fellow YouTubers (and Let's Players), Timothy Lloyd Bishop known as NintendoCapriSun, and Jonathan Wheeler known as ProtonJon. Chuggaaconroy and ProtonJon had been friends before starting the channel and had decided in 2011 that it would be beneficial to work together and start a side channel featuring games that work better with a group of people. They decided to only make videos in times where they could meet up since they felt that being in the same room provided more energy that would make for better content than just being in a Skype call with each other. At first, the invitation for NintendoCapriSun was intended for him to be a guest, since he was mutual friends with both Chuggaaconroy and ProtonJon, but he became a part of the main group and thus, TheRunawayGuys were formed.[13]

TheRunawayGuys channel has had decent success as well amassing a little over 400,000 subscribers and over 200,000,000 cumulative views from their videos. The channel focuses on the trio that lead the channel, but they often include other guests and even so tournaments for popular games where they invite many other YouTubers to participate and give them a chance to get their content more recognized as well. They have done tournaments for Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. and have invited YouTubers such as MasaeAnela, JoshJepson, and AttackingTucans. [14]

[edit]

In 2010 Chuggaaconroy had his account falsely flagged for copyright and this in turn led to a temporary suspension of his YouTube account. This was due to issues early on in YouTube where copyright claims were not checked with much detail. The policy was that as soon as three videos from a user were taken down due to copyright claims, the account is suspended. This led to his fans trying to gather support in getting his account back and showed early struggles that Chuggaaconroy faced during his YouTube career. [15]

Issues With Nintendo

[edit]

Chuggaaconroy and TheRunawayGuys have had issues with Nintendo concerning copyright claims and ad revenue. Nintendo has affected Chuggaaconroy and his revenue in May of 2013 due to the gaming company claiming that videos of their games and the revenue generated by the videos should go to Nintendo since they owned the games. Since then, Nintendo has backed off over copyrighting every video with their games featured but the danger of being filed for copyright still exists for Chuggaaconroy and other YouTubers. [16] For TheRunawayGuys channel a video was taken down due to copyright claims by Nintendo since they have the say over what they want to file a copyright for. Chuggaaconroy has spoken about this saying that he knows fellow YouTubers that may lose their jobs due to Nintendo copyright claims but expresses that this would not hinder the content he wants to produce, especially if it is an ongoing project.
