Derek Smith was born on March 10, 1987 in Bloomington, Minnesota. He grew up on farm where his parents would drink and smoke a lot of marijuana and he claims that even though his mother was never sober that’s she was a great mother but his father wasn't able to handle the alcohol and the high. He says that he wasn’t the best child and he came from a broken home [1]. His father left and his parents got a divorce. After the divorce he spent some time living in long beach califorina where his father lived [2]. From ages five to 10 he moved around a lot because his mother was jumping from job to job to make ends meet [3]. He would constantly skip school. He was diagnosed at a young age with Bipolar Disorder and he decided that he would never take medication for it. In High School Derek at the time claimed to be a werido saying he had brief case instead of a back pack, half colored hair, and wore the strangest clothes including wearing scarves. He claims he became a drummer because he envied Hansen and Travis Barker [1]. When Smith turned 18, he changed his first name to Dylan. He claims that after a psychedelic trip he came up with the idea that mentally becomes reality [1]. Smith's stage name, by which he is most known, is Mod Sun, an acronym that stands for "Movement on Dreams, Stand Under None," he also says that Mod Sun stands for "Modern Sunshine."[1]. Mod Sun was formerly a member of the post-hardcore band Four Letter Lie, in which he played drums from 2004 to 2009. He left the band because he wanted to peruse a happier sound [1]. He also was the drummer of the post-hardcore band Scary Kids Scaring Kids from 2009 until their disbandment in 2010. He claimed that the only reason he joined scary kids scaring kids is that he was unemployed and selling marijuana and after watching the movie “Yes Man” he decided to say yes to everything and when the lead singer of scary kids scaring kids approached him at warped tour he said yes to joining them on the rest of tour. He originally was the drum tech for the band and he was asked to fill in for the drummer once the original drummer had quit he only agreed to do it if he got to perform as Mod Sun. that would be his first time going up on stage as Mod Sun [1]. He has released five mixtapes and three EPs throughout his solo career. Mod Sun's style of music is often described as "hippy hop." Mod Sun's debut album "Look Up" was released on March 10, 2015 through Rostrum Records. On March 10, 2017, Mod Sun's second studio album "Movie" was released through Rostrum Records.
Mod Sun’s road to enlightenment started with a LSD trip that he claims changed his train of thought and his life. He says that he never came down from the high and since then he feels he had never woken up [1]. This created the title of his book “Did I Ever Wake Up?” in his book he discusses his motivations, his family, and most importantly the LSD trip that caused his ideals to can completely [4]. He decided that he’d be happy once this happened he brought joy to everyone. He says that with his positive attitude he discovered “everything you are can become everything you were,” he is claiming that in the mental decision to be happy you can reinvent yourself and make a change for the better. He says that the universe is always listening and as long as you think positively positivity will come to you. He follows the law of attraction which is mentality becomes reality. He claims that the challenges that are thrown at you are the universes way of testing you to see if you can move on, once you’ve overcome all of the obstacles thrown at you, you come to a place where the universe gives nothing but good fortune. Mod suns definition of enlightened is “an individual that is in control of his or her own thoughts.” [5].
