Nadine Chahine

Nadine Chahine is a Lebanese-born typeface designer and creator of some of the most popular and best-selling Arabic fonts. She currently works for Linotype, Germany as their Arabic specialist, as well as on Sales and Marketing.

Chahine was born in Beirut. She studied Graphic Design at the American University of Beirut (AUB), graduating with a BGD degree in 2000. Her interest in Arabic typography began at AUB, when she took a class with Samir Sayegh, a calligrapher and art critic. Chahine completed her MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading in 2003, and in September of 2007, she began studying for a Ph.D. at Leiden University on the topic of legibility studies for the Arabic script.

Chahine has created several Arabic versions of iconic Latin fonts, including Frutiger Arabic (a best-seller), Palatino Arabic, Neue Helvetica Arabic, and Univers Next Arabic. She has also created the typefaces Koufiya (the first dual Arabic and Latin font), Janna, Badiya, and BigVesta. In 2011, she designed a custom font face for the newly redesigned An-Nahar, Lebanon's leading Arabic-language daily newspaper.

Chahine has been the recipient of several awards thus far in her career. In 2000, she received the Dean's Award for Creative Achievement from the AUB. In 2008 and 2011, she received an Award for Excellence in Type Design from the Type Directors Club. Most recently, Fast Company named her #69 of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2012.
