Themba Khambule (born 10 October 1978) is a South African ex – politician turned businessman from Kwazulu Natal who served as the Councilor of Amajuba District in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa from 2005 to 2015 and was re-elected in 2016. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and the party’s Youth League Newcastle chairperson, elected in 2014 and re- elected in 2018. From 2014 to 2016, he served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa . Khambule was also a Member of the Pan African Parliament, serving in the Rural Economy, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Committee. [1][2]

He seats on many boards including the famous Vele and Associates Early Life Khambule was born in the rural village of Newcastle, in the Kwazulu Natal province South Africa. He was one of two children. He grew up in a house without running water or electricity. His mother earned a living as an informal trader selling handmade duvets and pillowcases in nearby towns. Khambule graduated from the Buhlebomzinyathi Secondary School in Osizweni in 1996, and went on to study at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg initially intending to study to become a technician. [3] He changed academic focus and instead earned a bachelor's degree as well as an honours Degree in Political Studies and International Relations.. [8] In his third year at the University of the Witwatersrand, Khambule was elected president of the university's Student Representative Body and joined the African National Congress Youth League. [3]

Controversy

On 17 August 2018, Khambule was arrested for speeding. He was caught driving at 182 km/h in 120 km/h zone, and subsequently released on bail. [17] Assault of spouseedit] On 20 March 2015, Khambule Khambule was a wanted man in Zimbabwe with allegations of abuse and using a firearm on his estranged wife Lindiwe, who is a Zimbabwean national and her friend. The case is still ongoing.

In 2015, Khambule was involved in a heavily publicised abuse scandal. After initially denying that he had pulled a gun on his wife , Lindiwe Mpesu, he later acknowledged that he was wrong and would report to the Zimbabwean authorities.

VBS Bank

A report published by the South African Reserve Bank in October 2018 indicated that Khambule's brother, Nkosi Shangase, was the recipient of R16,148,569 [28] (US$1.09 million) in irregular payments from the now collapsed bank VBS Mutual Bank. [29] Further investigative reporting by Pauli Van Wyk with considerable substantiating evidence alleged that R1.3 million of this money was then paid to Vele and Associates and R10 million given to Themba Khambule himself.

During this period the Mail & Guardian newspaper published an article based on WhatsApp texts leaked by a whistleblower alleging that Khambules brother's company was a conduit for Khambule to receive illicit payments.

Ongoing forensic financial investigations indicate that at least R1.84-million illicitly flowed from VBS Mutual Bank, via two front companies, into Khambule’s personal bank account. [ He was subsequently arrested with 8 others
