Daniel James Melvin 1708 - 1786 was sent to the United States from Scotland as a cabin boy on a ship when he was only ten years of age. His father (James Melvin 1680 - 1708) had died and his mother (Margaret Syme 1674 - 1722) remarried and he did not get along with his step-father. His mother sent him to the United States to live with her next of kin around 1717 which I believe was her brother John Syme who lived in Henrico County Va at that time. The ship on which he was sailing was captured by Blackbeard the Pirate (William Teach or Teachy), off the South Carolina coast when Blackbeard was blockading Charles town SC (Charlestown) harbor in May of 1718. One night he and two others slipped overboard to escape in empty water casks and swam to shore in the Northern part of South Carolina. His friend, 'Bones' and he made it to shore, but, the third man drowned.

Lore has it that he and his wife lived in a small room of a local store before building their home. He received a land grant for 100 acres of land along the South River in Bladen County North Carolina from the Crown Governor of New Berne NC. He settled down with his wife Jane Thomas and built their home along the South River in the Peters Creek area and raised their family.

Daniel had descendants that have fought in every war but this document is focused on the Civil War era only. Below is the list of names of his descendants that served during the Civil War that could be found through service records, retirement records and other sources.
