José Javier Delgado Esteban

José Javier Delgado Esteban (born in Madrid Spain, 30/11/1968) is a Spanish biologist, photographer, and entrepreneur known for his significant contributions to biological imaging and environmental photography. He lived in the United Kingdom for nearly two decades, where he worked in academia, before relocating permanently to Australia in 2023.

Early Life and Education

José Javier Delgado Esteban was born in Spain. He pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, earning a BSc (Hons) in Biological Imaging with First Class Honours from the University of Derby (1999-2002)​ [1] [2]. Before this, he completed a Natural Sciences Access Course at Norwich City College (1998-1999) and an HND in Media and Photography from the Luís Buñuel Institute in Madrid (1991-1995)​.

Career

Throughout his career, he developed a strong interest in photography, moving images, new media, and natural history. He has worked extensively in academic and professional settings, contributing significantly to biological imaging and environmental photography.

Delgado Esteban has won numerous awards for his photographic work. Notably, he received the First Prize in the Wildlife/Animals category at the Fine Art Photography Awards in 2015 for his series "Whale Nation: Humpback Whales of the South Pacific"​ [3]. He has also been recognized with several honours at the International Photography Awards [4]and the PX3, Prix de la Photographie Paris​ [5] [6] [7] [8].

His work often focuses on underwater subjects, and he has been acknowledged for his contributions to environmental and wildlife photography.

Scientific Contributions

Delgado Esteban is also the author of three notable scientific papers related to wild stingray communication. In February 2018, he observed sound production by a juvenile mangrove whipray U. granulatus while photographing the shallow, inshore waters of Geoffrey Bay, Magnetic Island, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia. It was a world-first observation.
