Transmitter
The transmitter is a device that converts the electronic input signal into a modulated light beam, in this case. This could be encoded using • Optical power • Optical phase • Polarization
If high data rates are required, the transmitter needs to meet a number of requirements particularly
• a high extinction ratio
• a low timing jitter
• low intensity noise
• a precisely controlled clock rate
• Stable and reliable operation
Optical Fiber
The transmission fiber chosen in general is single-mode fiber for handling both medium or long-distance transmission and a multimode fiber for short distances, preferably. But the usage of Multimode Fiber could possibly limit the transmission distance or bit rate intermodal dispersion.
Receiver
A photodetector, normally a photodiode along with suitable high-speed electronics is utilized to amplify the weak signal and extract the analog/digital data. The circuitry for electronic dispersion compensation can be added in order to ensure higher data rate transmission.
