Daniel Beltrá is a photographer and artist whose work centers around man's impact on our planet.

The focus of his recent work has been fine art aerial photography of landscapes and environmental issues. Beltrá's best known project is a series of photographs he made of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, titled "SPILL." These photos have been exhibited in galleries and museums across Europe and North America. Other notable topics he has photographed are tropical deforestation in Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and global warming in the Arctic, Patagonia and the Southern Ocean. In September 2012, he documented the record-lowest summer sea ice level in the Arctic,^[1] which became part of a series of images that were later included in his "ICE" exhibition.^[2]

Daniel Beltrá frequently has presented his work in slideshows and lectures at galleries and conferences across North America, including the 9th World Wilderness Congress,^[3] the Annenberg Space for Photography,^[4] the Aquarium of the Pacific,^[5] and the ABC Continuity Forum.^[6]

He has been on the jury of several photography contests, including the 2012 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, the 2014 Golden Turtle Awards,^[7] and as the chair of the nature category for the 2014 World Press Photo awards.^[8]

Daniel started his career with photos of bombings by the Basque separatist organization Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) while he was a student at the Complutense University of Madrid.^[9] He went on to work at EFE and the Gamma photo agency while also photographing assignments for Greenpeace. He moved to Seattle in 2001.^[10] He is a board member of the International League of Conservation Photographers.^[11]

Awards and Recognition

Daniel Beltrá has received numerous awards for his work:

In 2013, Spain's BBVA Foundation granted Daniel an award for Knowledge Dissemination and Communication in Biodiversity Conservation.^[25]

Beltrá was personally granted a commission by Charles, Prince of Wales for the Prince's Rainforests Project (PRP) to document the status of the world's great tropical rainforests in 2009.^[26] Beltrá received the inaugural "Global Vision Award" from the Pictures of the Year International.^[27]

In 2011, he won both the Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the "Deeper Perspective of the Year" from the International Photography Awards^[28] for his photographs from the previous year's Gulf Oil Spill.

His work was shortlisted for the 2012 Prix Pictet,^[29] and the subsequent exhibition, "Power," has toured the world, including London,^[30] Paris,^[31] and Istanbul.^[32]

In 2006, his work on the Amazon drought was awarded 3rd prize^[33] in the World Press Photo (WPP) awards nature series category, as well as the Golden Award in the China Press International Photo (CHIPP) Contest.^[34] In 2007, Beltrá won 2nd prize in the WPP awards in the contemporary issues category for a photo of tropical deforestation in the Amazon.^[35]

Daniel was also awarded first place in the Nature and Environment category in 2014 by the CHIPP contest.^[36]
