Cineworld is a cinema on Renfrew Street, Glasgow, located in the north east of the city centre, it is adjacent to the Buchanan bus station and the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, as well as being close to Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Galleries. At 203 feet (62 m) high, the building is currently the tallest cinema in the world.[1] [2]

By 2003 it was the busiest cinema, by admissions, in the UK.[3] Having drawn in over 1.8 million moviegoers in that same year.[4] Cineworld Glasgow has 18 screens, over 9 levels and can accommodate more than 4,300 people.[3]


History[edit]

Cineworld (Glasgow) was built on the site of Green's Playhouse, and opened as the UGC Cinema on the 21 September 2001. In 2005 it became part of the Cineworld chain and re-branded at that time. Green's Playhouse the original cinema on the site also held a record, for being Europe's largest cinema in terms of number of seats (4,368).

Entry in the Guinness Book of Records[edit]

At over 12 stories high, and with an entry in the Guinness Book of Records Cineworld(Glasgow) is the Worlds Tallest Cinema, the UGC was also the UK's busiest cinema in terms of admissions in 2003.

It seats around 4,300 in total over 18 screens, the largest of which seats 663, the smallest 84. The largest screen is 18.4m x 8.4m (60 feet x 27 feet, 2.2:1 ratio approx.) The screens are all wall to wall and floor to ceiling, with no tabs or masking

Criticisms[edit]

In 2000, during the cinema's construction, the building design came under heavy criticism from the architecture community. The building was awarded the dubious accolade of "Carbuncle of the Year" [5] for its' poor design choices and contrast with the surrounding area.

One feature of the cinema is a "glass elevator", which provides a panoramic view of the surrounding area.

Subscription Service[edit]

The Cineworld chain offers a subscription service in the form of a membership card, the "Unlimited Card" [7]. This card allows users unlimited access to showings, for a set price per month. The Unlimited Card has a minimum subscription period of 12 months. Currently, it is the only type of cinema subscription service available in the UK, Ireland and Jersey.

Unlimited Magazine[edit]

Unlimited Magazine is a cinema-themed magazine, launched in 2004. It provides information on current and upcoming films showing in Cineworld. Currently, it is free in all Cineworld cinemas.

Cineworld Conferencing[edit]

Cineworld(Glasgow) offers business's the ability to book one of their theatres for use with conference/presentation based events, they also provide processional planners to help with creating your conference/presentation. This service is provided through an on online booking form within the companies main web-page.

They also allow members of the public to book a theatre for private screenings of movies or for booking birthday parties where you can bring along your own games console and play on the large movie screens.

3D glasses[edit]

Cineworld have responded to customer feedback on recycling and environmental wastage, concerning 3D glasses. Therefore have now been encouraging customers to reuse their 3D glasses from previous 3D viewings, in order to make an immediate saving.

From the 26th of March 2010, they have also altered their pricing structure for 3D film on top of the ticket price.

Customers, who haven’t kept their 3D glasses will have to purchase glasses, if required, separately at a Retail counter. Orange Wednesday and Bargain Tuesday customers to pay the relevant 3D uplift. [8]
