First Contact:An Alien Encounter[edit]

First Contact:An Alien Encounter is a drama-documentary produced in 2022 by PBS and the BBC. It presents a fictionalised reception in the present day of an unexplained radio signal from space which is linked to the passage of an interstar object through the solar system. It intertwines interviews with scientists, astronomers, astrobiologists and a former UN Officer for Outer Space Affairs, with fictional news reports, social media posts, and scientific reactions to the alien object. The documentary covers three real events: - Reception of the Wow! signal in 1977 (reception of a radio signal of unknown origin in the 1420MHz band used to monitor for SETI signals). - Discovery of ʻOumuamua in 2017 (first confirmed interstar object to be catalogued). - Start of discovery of large numbers of possibly habitable exoplanets from 2009 with the Kepler space telescope.

Open Processor Foundation[edit]

The Open Processor Foundation is a non-profit group based in California USA, initially created to promote the J2 microprocessor based on the Hitachi SuperH processor. This came about as the patents were expiring in 2015 and so the design could be re-engineered as an open source design.

The foundation has announced it is working on a more advanced S series processor core.

Super High Material CD[edit]

SHM-CD is a digital optical disc data storage manufacturing process. It is an improved compact disc product with the greatest change being a different polycarbonate material that allows more precise physical representation of stored bits during pressing and less laser scatter during reading. These improvements aim to facilitate playback by producing fewer errors and potentially better sound quality. SHM-CDs are played on a standard CD player.

This process was developed in Japan by Universal Music Japan and JVC and launched in 2007. The same material can also be used to manufacture SHM-SACD discs. A small percentage of CD releases are re-released as SHM-CDs each year to the current date.

SHM-CDs are visually identifiable by their innermost rings, which have the format's logo stamped across the circumference.

In 2013 Universal Music Japan introduced Platinum SHM-CDs, which replaced the normal aluminium layer in the CD with platinum, with claimed further advantages. Only a small number of albums have been released in this format.[1] Links
