DLM AG, Dampflokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik Aktiengesellschaft, is a Swiss manufacturer of modern steam engines for railway and marine service. The company was formed in the year 2000 and is headed by Roger Waller. It was formerly the steam engine division of Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) in Winterthur. The company is notable as being one of the few in the world that is still able to manufacture new steam locomotives.

Locomotives

Since 1992, SLM/DLM has supplied steam locomotives to the following rack railways:

Roger Waller and modern steam development by SLM and DLM

[edit]

Roger Waller spent some time in South Africa in the early 1980s joining a small team of engineers headed by David Wardale. The team was set up to investigate the improvements possible to existing SAR steam locomotives to bring them into line with modern traction requirements. The outcome was the successful updating of two locomotives using methods based on the principles established by the Argentine engineer, Livio Dante Porta (1922-2003).

The success of these rebuilds encouraged Roger Waller to persuade SLM to offer new-build modern steam locomotives for the tourist market in Switzerland especially rack and pinion mountain railways where SLM had considerable experience. Waller succeeded in obtaining firm orders from the Swiss Brienz Rothorn Bahn and the Schafbergbahn in Austria.

In the late 1990s, SLM rebuilt the German 2-10-0 locomotive number 52 8055 [1] using "modern steam" principles. This locomotive is now owned by DLM and is used for hauling steam excursion trains.

Sulzer Winpro (former SLM) in Winterthur sold its steam business for an undisclosed sum to Hug Engineering, a company making ceramic catalysers for diesel engines. Hug also owns a machine-building company which works partly for its catalyser business, but also as a supplier for the rolling stock industry.
