History

[edit]

3 Medical Regiment was formed in 2000 following the 1998 Strategic Defence Review. The Regiment was formed from 3 squadrons: A (12) Medical Squadron, B (16) Medical Squadron, and C (24) Medical Squadron. Following their formation, the Regiment was assigned to the 3rd (United Kingdom) Mechanised Division and based at Gaza Barracks. In 2002, the Regiment was renamed as 3 Close Support Medical Regiment.[1][2]

Over the next 10 years, from 2003 to 2013, the Regiment saw multiple deployments to Iraq (OP Telic) and Afghanistan (OP Herrick).[2] These deployments were:[2]

TELIC II (16 Close Support Sqn only, supporting 19th Mechanised Brigade) ,TELIC X (16 Close Support Sqn only, supporting 1st Mechanised Brigade), TELIC XII (Supporting 7th Armoured Brigade), HERRICK IV (16 Close Support Sqn only, supporting 16th Air Assault Brigade), HERRICK XII (Supporting 4th Mechanised Brigade), HERRICK XVII (Supporting 4th Mechanised Brigade)

In 2010, as a result of the Army 2020 reforms, the Regiment was moved under operational control of the 102nd Logistics Brigade but supporting 3 UK Division.[3][4]

In 2015, as a result of the Army 2020 Refine reforms, it was announced that 102nd Logistic Brigade was to be rationalised and disbanded.[1][2][5][6] The Regiment was to be re-equipped with the Mechanised Infantry Vehicle and will see a reduction in personnel.[5][6][1][2][5][6] At this time, the Regiment was reformed as a Hybrid Medical Regiment with a Regular component of RHQ, 12 Medical Squadron and 18 Support Squadron supported by Reservists from 64 Medical Squadron (V) in Chorley and 251 Medical Squadron (V) in Sunderland.

In 2018, following the reversal of the decision to disband 102 Logistic Brigade and develop the Joint Expeditionary Force (Land) Light Brigade, the Regiment was re-roled again away from STRIKE to Light and made wholly regular. This saw 64 Medical Squadron (V) moved to 253 Medical Regiment and 251 Medical Squadron (V) moved to 225 Medical Regiment. At the same time, 2 Medical Regiment, also hybrid, was disbanded and 29 Medical Squadron was moved to Preston to form up the new 3 Medical Regiment. The Regiment is now fully Regular and is focused on the delivery of Health Services Support to 1 (UK) Division and is held at high readiness to deploy as part of the JEF (L) Light Brigade.
