How to Dunk

Most people think that you can either jump high or you can't. Many stereotypes come into play during the conversations of dunking like, "white men can't jump" and other sayings of that nature. While that may be true due to genetics, there are ways to enhance your bounce. When I was in middle school, I watched many basketball highlights of players who could dunk, and I wanted to be just like them. I told myself that I was going to be able to dunk during my freshman year of high school, and then I started my grind.

The first step in trying to dunk is learning how to jump. You have to know how to correctly jump for maximum explosiveness when getting off of the ground. Start with your approach run. Your approach run can be as fast or as slow as you would like it to be, but your last 2 steps should be your power step and your gather step. Those last two steps are pretty self explanatory in the sense of the purpose that they serve in your takeoff process.

Once you get the jumping technique down, the easy and fun part of is before you, the dunk itself. Upon getting close to the rim after jumping, you should extend your arms with the ball in your hands, and simply put the ball in the basket and grab the rim. When you dunk it puts emphasis and style on the two points that you gain from making it. It also excites the crowd, which in turn hypes your team up and increases your positive momentum.

Dunking isn't really complicated to do, it's actually quite simple. The main thing you need to focus on when trying to dunk is your takeoff. If you don't have an effective takeoff, then you won't get the most out of your jump and will probably miss the dunk.
