Richard Todd Handley (born January 24, 1965) is an American actor, film producer, screenwriter, physician, and healthcare executive.

Career[edit]

Military career[edit]

Handley served from 1988 to 1994 in the Colorado Air National Guard as a medic to 120th Fighter Squadron at the Buckley Air Force Base, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.[1][better source needed] Also during this time, Handley was studying psychology and pre-medicine at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, from which he graduated in 1994.[1][2][better source needed] Handley continued his service for six more years as a Commissioned Medical Service Corps Officer, Physician Associate (PA) in the United State Navy from 1994 until his honorable discharge at the rank of Lieutenant in 2000.[1][3] During his time in the Navy he was stationed in at Naval Training Center Branch Medical Clinic, Naval Medical Center San Diego in San Diego where he practiced urgent care and family medicine, specifically serving active duty personnel and their dependents.[4][5] He also served on the USS Constellation as the "Ship's PA" in the Emergency Department and Sick Call bays. During this time in the Navy he would earn a Master's degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, specializing in family medicine.[1][6][better source needed] Handley also served in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor and Medical Officer for Wells World Services under Operation Enduring Freedom in 2011, which included holding a full medical credential to work as an Emergency Department PA at the Craig Joint Theater Hospital, Bagram Airfield.[1][better source needed]

Film career[edit]

In 1999, just before the end of his military service, Handley studied acting at a local San Diego theater, which lead to him moving to Los Angeles after his Naval service.[3]

In Los Angeles, he attended the Professional Program in Producing at UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, where he also interned for producer Kevin Misher at Misher Films.[7][8][9] As part of that internship, he worked in script development, reading a number of screenplays and providing written coverage on them. He worked with Misher during the development and pre-production phases of The Interpreter and The Rundown.[2][10][11][better source needed]

Handley received a Master's of Fine Arts degree from Mount St. Mary's University in 2016.[12] While at Mount St. Mary's University, he wrote, produced, and directed a number of short films, including Hourglass, which won the 2015 Indy Gathering International Film Festival's award for best sci-fi film.[13] During his time there, he met Brian Hanson in 2014, and the two forged a partnership which led to the creation of The Black String.[14] He and Hanson wrote the script for The Black String as part of their Master's thesis.[14]

In 2016, Handley would star alongside Mariel Hemingway in the TV movie Finding Fortune.[15][16][10][11][17][18] Handley also co-produced the film.[18]

Upon graduating from film school, Handley served as Associate Producer on director Adam Ripp's feature length horror film, Devil's Whisper,[19] Three months after finishing Devil's Whisper, Handley would serve as Lead Producer in charge of production while co-starring as psychiatrist Dr. Jason Ronaldi for his psychological thriller, The Black String.[20]

Medical career[edit]

Handley completed the Doctor of Health Science degree in 2010 and Doctor of Medicine degree in 2018.[1][6][21][22] Handley graduated from Harvard Medical School in 2020 with a Master's degree in Healthcare Quality and Safety.[6][23][24] During his time at Harvard he completed a year-long graduate research/Fellowship in healthcare quality and safety at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he conducted and published quality improvement research within the Hospital Medicine Unit.[25] In 2021, he completed an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the Quantic School of Business and Technology.[26][better source needed] Handley is licensed to practice medicine as a PA in California.[citation needed] Handley is the Chief Operating Officer of healthcare company Wells World Services, which he helped found in 2010.[1][better source needed] He is board certified as a PA through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, board certified in healthcare management as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, as well as a board certified professional in healthcare quality.[27][28] He is also a member of the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research.[29]

Personal life[edit]

Handley has been married to Marisela Handley since 2004, which they live together in Valencia, California. They have two children.

Handley is a member of the Veterans in Media and Entertainment.[30] Handley co-founded Right Hemisphere Films, which won five silver Telly awards and three bronze Telly awards for film and video production music composition, graphics, sound design, animation, direction, producing, company demo reel, art direction.[31][32][33] He is a 1st Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.[34][better source needed]
