AN/URM 25-x Signal Generator: Maintenance and Refurbishment Notes[edit]

Purpose[edit]

This page was created to provide hard-to-find information to hobbyists who wish to service this line of RF signal generators which although have not been in production in decades, are still found commonly in use. There are many "do's and don'ts" that are vital to technicians to ensure a successful restoration.

Sources[edit]

The internet was scoured for any trace of past threads, comments etc. related to the AN/URM 25. Sources are sited at the bottom of the page where appropriate, but some information has been paraphrased.

Introduction[edit]

The AN/URM 25 signal generator line was produced by various contractors for the Military in the '50's. This rugged line of RF signal generators were built to last, and with some parts replacement, can provide a stable frequency for a decent price for use on your test bench.

Do's/Don'ts At-a-glance[edit]

1. Line filter capacitors are pass-through's and frequently fail, causing the line chokes to fail in turn, which are hard to replace. 2. Most capacitors are of paper type, and can cause more serious problems upon failure. These should all be replaced. Details to follow. 3. Turret: care must be taken working with this, or brass contacts can break, as well as high-tolerance tuning resistors.
