The use of reef-points dates back to the Viking era, though not all European sailing vessels since then have utilized them, they have been commonplace on small European sailing craft for hundreds of years. On large vessels during the height of the Age of Sail the reef points were large, heavy (often weighing twelve ounces or more), and woven of plaited sennit although manila rope was also used [1]
