My Musical Background and Outlook

[edit]

I’m a composer/arranger and I also play the guitar. I used to play the piano and the cello when I was a child. My parents gave me a cello at first. However, I couldn’t get right pitch because I was too young and I didn’t know what the right pitch was. Therefore, my parents purchased an up-light piano and I started taking lessons. I actually hated it at that time and I regret it. I should have taken the lessons more seriously. The skill of playing piano is very important for all composers and arrangers. How could a three years old child know this fact? I couldn’t, so I hated it. I’m just familiar with piano and stringed instruments, so I do thank my parents. I now own a viola and a cello. Those teach me how to arrange strings section. I’m not good player though. I took piano lessons for 7 years. However, I couldn’t be a fine pianist. Finally, I stopped playing it and then I started playing basketball. When I entered junior high school, there was no basketball club. I had nothing to do, so I was completely bored. I wanted to do something. At that time, a lot of Japanese rock bands were making musical movements. I loved “visual-kei” music. It’s rock music by musicians who wear make-up. I asked my mom to buy a cheap electric guitar and I started playing it. I still believe that my music background is based on this era. My music is influenced by J-Rock, especially visual-kei music. When I entered high school, I joined a jazz club. I tried to learn jazz, but I couldn’t stop playing rock music. I started thinking of studying abroad.

My Music

[edit]

I love video game and animation. Tokyo is capital city of video game and animation. I would like to work for the industry in Japan and compose music for Japanese video game and animation. Melody is the most important thing of my music. I compose melody first. Then harmony and rhythm follow it. I try to put some tastes of Japan into my melodies like drawing a picture of Japanese traditional beautiful nature view. I’m guitarist, so it’s easy to make guitar parts for my music. I used to employ rock guitar methods when I composed music. However, I now am trying to avoid that. I want to have variations and I’m interested in strings today. I don’t practice guitar very much. I compose music for strings. Violin, viola and cello are the most expressive instruments for me. Those are necessary for film music, so I should learn how to employ strings for my music. I believe it will help me a lot when I start my career in the industry of Japanese video game and animation. Today, it’s very difficult to sell a lot of CDs. Everybody owns iPods and they use iTunes download store. Music cannot stand with itself anymore. Music has to follow other cultures and medias in order to survive. That is the reason why I chose video game and animation. Those have huge markets in Japan. If I can compose music for those, I can make money. My rivals are movies from Hollywood. I understand those are great, but I don’t like those. Everybody agrees with this idea “Hollywood is the capital city of movie industry.” I hope everybody admits that Tokyo is the capital city of video game and animation industry.
