Bronsten Kossow[edit]

Bronsten "Kalei" Kossow (August 1, 1994 - Present) is an American politician and current member of the County of Hawaii - Game Management Advisory Commission. Kossow was born Bronsten-Glenn Kaleikaumaka Hulihe'e Mamoru Shim Fukumitsu Kossow in Kealakekua, Hawaii to Kristen Kam and Elmer Fukumitsu. Kossow is a fifth generation Japanese descendent, and of Native Hawaiian lineage. Most notably, Kossow is a lineal decedent of former Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Joseph Fern. Kossow is a member of the Democratic Party of Hawai'i, and a candidate for Hawai'i County Council District 7[1][2], that was vacated by the incumbent, council member Dru Kanuha of Kona.

Early Life[edit]

Kossow's family is from the Big Island of Hawaii where his primary residence as a child is held in Kona. Kossow grew up with his grandparents, and stated in numerous occasions that they created his upbringings. Kossow's grandfather, Glenn Kossow is a small business owner of a landscaping company in Kailua-Kona. His grandmother, Barbara Kossow, works for the County of Hawaii. On his father's side of the family Kossow is part of a long standing Kona Coffee heritage that still remains within his family today.

Kossow has been apart of Boy Scouts of America since age 11, and obtained his Eagle Scout Award[3] at age 17. For Kossow's Eagle Project, he worked hand-in-hand with the County of Hawaii and the Parks and Recreations, with cooperation from the Veterans Advisory Committee; to create and implement an informational brochure and interment directory for the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery. To which, Kossow also holds membership to. With that recognition, Kossow also held multiple positions in the Order of the Arrow; scoutings National Honor Society. Kossow also holds the highest honor given to an order member, the vigil honor.

In 2016, Kossow ran an unsuccessful campaign for State House of Representatives to the sixth district in Hawaii[5], against democratic incumbent Nicole Lowen[6].

November of 2017, Kossow announced his candidacy for Hawaii County Council District 7. Kossow states, “I am proud to be born and raised in this beautiful community. I am eager to jump into the conversation and continue the discussion of the current issues that our community is facing such as: creating efficiency in government; pushing for temporary housing for our homeless, working with both County and State agencies to expand the services to those who need assistance; investing in a long-term plan to implement Kona water well security; striving for renewable and alternative energy sources; and enhancing agriculture development for food sustainability.”[8]
