A Little Bit About Me

[edit]

My name is Katherine. I am a freshman at Georgia Southern University, a mid-size university in Statesboro, Georgia that knows how to party. However, too much party and not enough study won't get you far. As a poor college student, I am here mostly because I am a HOPE Scholarship recipient, which provides financial assistance to residents of Georgia who maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 in high school. My focus of study is biology and I further plan to attend medical school in the years to come.

While I'm hitting the books or studying in the library, I can think of many things I would rather be doing. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Dancing
  • Playing the piano
  • Spending time with friends and family
  • Relaxing at Starbucks with a book in one hand and a Caramel Macchiato in the other
  • Skiing or snowboarding
  • Laying on the beach
  • Traveling

My Work

[edit]

I am currently working on The Clothesline Project, an article I started after seeing the desire for it. I have a passion for helping those who are less fortunate or have been troubled in various ways. This article focuses on a non-profit organization created to address the issue of violence against women. I intend to continue improving the article to spread awareness for the cause. I also took on a stub article about Prince Avenue Christian School that I hope to better in the near future.

It's A Love/Hate Relationship

[edit]

I strongly feel that technology is a powerful tool that has brought on great development in the world. However, I do think that we are far too technologically dependent. While there has been significant advancement in research due to technology, devices such as cell phones and computers occupy too much time in our daily lives. I hate to say it, but I am guilty as charged. I find myself on Facebook way too often and my phone is in my hand at all times.

While most of my time spent on the computer is on the internet, occasionally I take advantage of different programs. I know the basics of Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel, but that is the extent of my knowledge. By no means do I know what half of the tools do. I also had two years of experience working with Jostens to create my high school yearbook. By now, I'm sure I have forgotten how to work most of the program.

Here's What I Think

[edit]

I always thought that Wikipedia was a website for anyone to post any information on. While this is partially true, I did not realize that there were rules and people to govern the articles and decide what is fit for the site. My high school teachers always gave me the impression that someone could post that the grass was blue and readers were supposed to believe it. Now that I am working on an article for an assignment, I find that there is much more to it than that.

Someone that writes for Wikipedia must care enough to do the research and post accurate information. I don't think that Wikipedia should be used as a resource for papers because I don't think all of the information is checked and edited as strictly as it could be. Personally, I think it is a great site for finding basic information over certain topics. Now that I know more about Wikipedia, I search articles to learn background information about various things.

Languages

[edit]

Unfortunately, I cannot say that I am bilingual. The only language I fully understand is English and therefore it is the language I read, write, and speak. I hope to one day learn Spanish, French, and Italian so that I will be able to communicate when I travel to different countries.
