Denis Vairasse d'Alais (c 1637-c 1683). French Huguenot writer, soldier, lawyer. Spent part of his life in exile in England; expelled for political activities; returned to France; served in army; in later years taught English and other subjects in Paris. Also wrote exhaustive study of French grammar and a simpler French grammar for English-speakers.
