"Bandershtat" is an all-Ukrainian "festival of the Ukrainian spirit" held every summer in Volyn, in the city of Lutsk and its surroundings. It is an artistic hallmark of this region. It was first held in 2007 and has since become an annual event.

Festival in the morning

The festival takes place annually in Lutsk or Rovantsi and lasts for 3 days. The festival features performances by Ukrainian bands representing all styles and trends of contemporary Ukrainian alternative music. The festival also hosts workshops of various kinds that promote a pro-Ukrainian way of thinking, the Ukrainian language, culture, life activity, etc.

The goal of the festival is to:

  • promote the Ukrainian national idea among young people and creative teams;
  • promote life activity and a healthy lifestyle among young people;
  • perpetuate the image of Stepan Bandera as a national symbol;
  • support gifted youth;
  • promote respect for the environment and environmental education;
  • promote the Ukrainian language, culture, values and native music.

Participation in the festival is subject to a number of conditions:

  • it does not have a competitive basis;
  • performers from all regions of Ukraine, who have a repertoire in the Ukrainian language that does not contain any anti-Ukrainian propaganda, profanity, does not promote bad habits and promotes Ukrainian values are allowed to participate in the festival;
  • participation in the festival is free;
  • only live performance is allowed at the festival;
  • the selection of participants and the sequence of performances is determined by the organisers;
  • teams from other cities are provided with accommodation only for the day of their performance[1].

2007. The first Bandershtat festival was dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. The festival was attended by 17 musical groups from different regions of Ukraine. On 15-16 September, the following bands performed at the festival: "V.O.D. A, Halas (Lutsk), Spalenі Vіtrila (Rivne), Apatіya (Volodymyr-Volynskyi), Underground Dimension (Ivano-Frankivsk), Projektor Dzhmil (Lviv), Smaragda (Kyiv), Brem Stoker (Rivne), Viskula, "Dispel (Lutsk), Softminor (Kovel), Breaking Brain Without Aim (Chernivtsi), H-44 (Lutsk), Heart Attack (Lutsk-Chernivtsi), De Sense (Chervonohrad), SLAP (Lutsk), Polynove Pole (Lviv), and Shadow of the Sun (Kyiv). Over the course of the two festival days, the event was attended by about 500 young people, mostly from Volyn. There were also guests from Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Kyiv, etc[2].

2008. The two-day festival programme included various art workshops, football, volleyball and basketball competitions, and demonstrations of combat hopak, parkour, frisbee and sox. Everyone remembered the bicycle race that started in Lutsk and ended on the festival grounds. Members of the Volyn OUN-UPA brotherhood, former insurgents, also visited Bandershtat for the first time. They were sincerely surprised that young people organise such events, that they are not forgotten and paid tribute to. The concert programme consisted of 22 bands. The headliner of the first day of the festival was the Lviv-based band ANNA, which is well-known on the alternative scene. The festival was closed by the masters of Ukrainian rock, the legendary Komu Vnyz[3].

2009. The event was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Stepan Bandera's birthday and aimed to raise the Ukrainian national idea among young people. The highlight of the event was a military and historical reconstruction of the UPA's battle with the NKVD. More than 5,000 people took part in the all-Ukrainian alternative music festival Bandershtat-2009, held on 8-9 August near Lutsk. The festival also featured paragliding in the sky above the event area. In the afternoon and until midnight, the alternative music concert programme lasted, with participants from Kyiv, Kherson, Lviv, Rivne, Lutsk, Bila Tserkva, Chernivtsi, Chervonohrad and Volodymyr-Volynskyi, as well as Belarus. Famous guests of the festival included the bands Tartak and Rollix (Kherson)[4].

2010-th

2010. Demonstrations and master classes in combat hopak, patriotic tattoos and body art, hand-to-hand combat competitions, power games, laser tag, paintball, hang gliding, a fair of Ukrainian ethnic products and crafts - all this and much more became an integral part of the festival that year. Among the well-known and young bands invited by the organising committee were: "ZLAM (Kyiv), Ethno XL (Rivne), Fiolet (Lutsk), King Size (Lutsk), Bezodnia (Khmelnytsky), Veremiy (Kyiv), Shadow of the Sun (Kyiv) and Rollix (Kherson), with a special guest appearance by the opposition rapper from Belarus, Vinsent. The festival also featured a literary stage with writers and poets from Lviv, Lutsk, Poltava and Zhytomyr. The festival was attended by about 5,000 people.[5].

2011. This year, the organisers managed to bring together the most powerful line-up of musicians in the history of the festival. In addition to Volodymyr Pastushko, a bard from Rivne region, the bands TerraKod (Belarus), Gapochka (Kyiv), Veremiy (Kyiv), Merva (Rivne), Anderson (Kyiv), Brem Stoker (Rivne), Martovi (Vinnytsia) took part in the concert, Violet (Lutsk), Sweetlo (Kyiv), Jeweller (Lutsk), Vorst (Rivne), HuCH (Lviv), CUBE (Lutsk), 4Hours (Lutsk), The Crabs (Rivne), Abyss, Shyroky Lan (Kalush), Burnt Sails (Rivne), Etsetera (Sumy), 30 Parallel (Morshyn). The headliners of the event were Horta, Smoky Mixture and Tartak. On Saturday, Yuriy Shukhevych visited Bandershtat to talk to the festival participants and share his impressions of the current political situation in Ukraine. In addition to the main music stage, the festival also featured an acoustic stage for the first time, with more than a dozen bands from different cities of Ukraine performing. In addition, the largest nationalist flash mob in Ukraine took place. Festival participants lined up in front of the stage and formed a large inscription "Bandera"[5].

2012. The sixth Bandershtat festival was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. The festival's musical programme included performances by the Ukrainian bands Kozak System and Tanok na Maidan Congo, the "symbol of the festival", the lead singer of the Tartak band Sashko Polozhynsky, the Komu Vnyz band (Kyiv), Orest Lyutyi with the Stalin & Hitler Kaput band, the Lutsk band Fiolet, the rock band Radio Silence (Vinnytsia), O.Torvald (Poltava) and many others. An important event of Bandersnatch was a meeting with veterans of the OUN and UPA, which took place in the form of a conversation with the audience. A special guest was Myroslav Symchych from Ivano-Frankivsk region, a legendary hundredth of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, a political prisoner of the Gulag, known for commanding the most effective battle of the UPA near Kosmach in January 1945. The festival participants staged a patriotic flash mob - people built the UPA abbreviation from their bodies, which was photographed from an aerial view. Night film screenings were a novelty at Bandershtat. Taras Choliy, a producer from Lviv, brought Ukrainian films to the festival - "Golden September" and "Silver Land".[5]. 

2013. In parallel to the main stages of the festival, such as music, acoustic, gutirka, and literary, no less interesting events took place. For example, on the mornings of 3 and 4 August, the guests of Bandershtat were offered informative tours by the Tourist Information Centre. The festival's community programme became a platform for discussing topics important to society, and a meeting was held with veterans of the Klym Savur Brotherhood of OUN-UPA Soldiers of the Volyn Region. The festival's Big Stage featured 16 bands from different cities of Ukraine and one band from Belarus: "Etnaterra" (Volodymyr-Volynskyi), "Rizak" (Kalush), "ZLAM" (Kyiv), "Gretchen's Room" (Dnipro), "KETO" (Lutsk), "Etsetera" (Sumy), "Sciana" (Brest, Belarus), Golem (Lutsk), Mechanical Orange (Lviv), PanKe Shava (Kyiv), Tristavisim (Uzhhorod), Cold Sun (Ternopil), Coralli (Ivano-Frankivsk), O. Torvald (Kyiv), Iron Cross (Lviv) and the headliners of Bandershtat - Tartak and Skryabin. The festival visitors could also enjoy an acoustic stage and nightly film screenings. The acoustic stage was open for two nights in a row, where about ten performers played insurgent and lyrical songs[6]. 

2014. The festival took place on 1-3 August. In addition to Western Ukraine, guests from Donetsk, Luhansk, Simferopol, Svitlovodsk, Sevastopol, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kirovohrad, Moscow, Belarus, the Czech Republic, Poland, the Republic of Congo and Ireland visited "Bandershtat".

The Gutirkova stage of Banderstat became a discussion platform for discussing the pressing issues of Ukraine today. Meetings were held with Taras Tkachenko, director of the film Rebellion in Spirit, a documentary about the rebellion of Ukrainian prisoners in the Russian city of Norilsk, Oleg Vyshnia, author of the socio-political project Next Republic, Yegor Sobolev, the country's "chief lustrator", Volodymyr Pastushko and Oleksandr Guch. The festival was also attended by members of the Klym Savur Brotherhood of OUN-UPA Soldiers of the Volyn Region. The main stage of the festival started immediately after the talks. It was opened by the musical project GarageDrumShow from Lutsk. Other performers on the stage included Part of Universe, 4hours-band, Shyroky Lan, KEtO, Dyki Sertsem, Brem Stoker, Veremiy, Motor'Rolla, Molfa, Fiolet, Rizak, Bouvier, Komu Vnyz, RIZUPS, Rollix, the Irish band Cruachan, and Skryabin. Traditionally, guests from Belarus came to the festival. In 2014, it was the band Zatoczka[be]. The acoustic stage featured performances by the bands Mechanical Orange, Surenzh, Vidstan, SWEETLO and Billy Milligan Band. A patriotic flash mob took place on the same day. More than 1,500 participants of the Bandershtat festival sent a message to their eastern neighbour. Bandershtat residents built the phrase "PTN-PNH" out of their bodies[7].

2015. The ninth Banderstat took place on 1-3 August in Lutsk and brought together 6,000 guests. More than a thousand Bandershtat residents settled in the tent city. The geography of the festival has also expanded. In addition to visitors from all regions of Ukraine, Lutsk was visited by Crimeans, Czechs, Belarusians, Russians, French, English and Canadians. 300 soldiers from Azov, Aidar, DUK, Dnipro-1 and the 14th Brigade attended the festival free of charge. The Azov Regiment's Civilian Corps ensured the safety of all visitors.

The discussion platform brought together representatives of social movements, politicians, and artists. The audience was addressed by MP Volodymyr Parasyuk, Dnipro-1 regiment commander Yuriy Bereza, film director Oles Sanin, writer Vasyl Shklyar, UPA veterans, representatives of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, Nadiya Savchenko's sister Vira, and festival hosts Viktoria Zhukovska and Mіsch. During the three days of Bandershtat, a Children's Village for the youngest visitors was running. Among the most famous music stars of the festival were the Belarusian-Ukrainian band Brutto, the ONUKA music project, Tartak, FlyzZza, O.Torvald, Rollix, Fiolet, Shadow of the Sun, ANNA, and Karna. For the proceeds from the Bandersnatch Ukrainian Resistance Festival, the 14th Separate Mechanised Brigade of Volodymyr-Volynskyi was purchased a thermal imager[8][9].

2016. The jubilee Bandershtat took place on 5-7 August in Lutsk's Central Park. This year, 9,000 people came to Bandershtat. This number of guests was a record for the event. Visitors came from all over Ukraine and from abroad, including Israel, France, the USA, Poland, Belarus and Russia. 2,600 tents were set up in the festival camp on the hippodrome grounds. 650 ATO soldiers visited Bandershtat free of charge.

The main stage featured performances by FREEDOM from Lutsk, ARLETT from Bila Tserkva, ANNA, Fiolet, ROLLIX, Braty Gadyukiny, Tartak, Brutto, O. Torvald, Jamala, Haidamaky, Antytila, Zhadan i Sobaki, Veremiy, Morphine Suffering, Epolets, Stoned Jesus, Karna[10].

2017. The eleventh festival took place on 4-6 August near Lutsk in the village of Rovantsi. For the convenience of the guests, the organisers set up a pontoon bridge connecting the village of Rovantsi with the Central Park in Lutsk. For the first time, the new location of Bandershtat allowed for three music stages of different styles. The event brought together 12,000 people over three days. Festival-goers came from all over Ukraine. Most of the guests were from Lviv, Kyiv, Rivne and Lutsk. There were also visitors from other countries: Italy, Israel, Austria, Japan, Germany, Belarus, France and the USA. A significant number of visitors stayed in the tent city. More than 2,000 tents were set up on the territory.

Boombox, Vopli Vidoplyasova, Krykitka, Bez Obmezhen, Ot Vinta!, Vivienne Mort, Odyn v kanoe, Anatoly Tapolsky made their debuts at the festival. A total of 60 bands performed. In addition to the music programme, there were traditional talks at Bandershtat. In particular, there were meetings with the acting Minister of Health Uliana Suprun, musician Oleh Skrypka, well-known journalist Roman Skrypin, economist Pavlo Sheremeta, and hospitalist Yana Zinkevich. For the first time, UA Made Fest was held at Bandershtat. The fair was attended by 12 domestic clothing manufacturers. In addition, there were 65 points of sale of handmade goods. Festival participants also took part in a patriotic flash mob dedicated to the anniversary of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Several thousand Banderstat residents formed the inscription "UPA 75". "BanderFoodFest treated the festival guests to a variety of food. A children's town allowed guests to come to the festival with their families. The sports programme was also very busy. There were also literary matinees and night film screenings[11][11].

2018. The twelfth Bandersnatch was held on 3-5 August in Rovantsi, attended by about 14,000 people from all over Ukraine, as well as guests from Belarus, Poland, Germany, China, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Russia.

Over the three days of the festival, 63 bands performed on the music stages: "Tartak, Druha Rika, O'torvald, Bez Obmezhen, Am Giant (New Zealand), Taras Chubay and the Lamentations of Jeremiah, Odyn v kanoe, Sunset Trail (Czech Republic), Arsen Mirzoyan, Khrystyna Soloviy, "Karna, Joryj Kłoc, New Deadline (Finland), Yurcash, Zhadan & Dogs, Rollix, ANNA, NaviBand (BY), Mary, Morphine Suffering, WRCKG (Netherlands), Katya Chilly Group 432 GC, PAVLIK OVERDRIVE, Borsch, Dj Tapolsky, Space Of Variations, The Hypnotunez, Bila Vezha, Nastya Znakaye, Arlett, Niagara, Milky Way, 5 Vymir, Roll Models, LETAY, Dimicandum, MegamasS, "[O]", Adam, KRUT, Zhenya Skruzh, "The Nietzsche, DASH, Jazzforacat, Ptashnyk, Mari Cheba, Motanka, Alex Jazz, Claudless, Farinhate, Arthur Danielyan, PANCHYSHYN, KRICHUSS, Jillhouse, Atlantic With, Zerno, Pallilap, Time Shadow, Count on Me.

The guests of the Gutirka stage were: UPA veterans, Andriy Sadovyi, Serhiy Ivanov, Oleksandr Shevchenko, Zurab Alasania, Yevhen Halych, representatives of the Tvoy Kraina (Your Country) civic movement, Artem Halytskyi, Andriy Biletskyi, Serhiy Sternenko, Maksym Kotsiuba, Olha Yurkova, Volodymyr Parasyuk, representatives of the Ukraїner socio-cultural multimedia publication, Yevhen Karas, Yurko Zhuravel, and Olesia Isaiuk.

The literary scene featured performances by: Lyubko Deresh, Max Kidruk, Ivan Baidak, Serhiy Zhadan, Pavlo Kucher, Dmytro Lazutkin, and Volodymyr Lis.

In addition, there were about 30 other locations on the festival grounds: a children's town, a sports area, a food court, the Alley of NGOs, the Non-Formal Education Zone, a night bonfire, a historical reconstruction, a fair of Ukrainian craftsmen[12], a military garrison, a book fair, etc.

A patriotic flash mob was held during Bandershtat. In the evening of the second day of the festival, about two thousand visitors used flashlights and mobile phone screens to write a huge word FREE to support Ukrainians illegally detained in prisons in Russia.

2019. "This year's Bandershtat took place on 2-4 August in the village of Rovantsi. The area was surrounded by a temporary fence. The festival was attended by 10700 people, including 2213 combatants. In addition to Ukrainians, there were guests from the US, UAE, Israel, France, Poland and Belarus. The festival was organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, as the festival won the Small Cities - Great Impressions community project competition. Lutsk City Council and the Boratyn Amalgamated Territorial Community also became partners of the festival.

Serhiy Vasylyuk ("Shadow of the Sun"), Svyatoslav Boyko and Oleksandr Kozynets ("Shyroky Lan"), Boombox, Tartak, Kozak System, Odyn v kanoe performed, "Vivienne Mort, Space of Variations, KARNA, Epolets, Qarpa, Rollix, Fiolet, Zhadan i Sobaki, FliT, BAKENBARDY, DETACH, Group [O], DJs Dj Tapolsky, Micik Gonibez and Dan Alien.

A special feature of the festival was the literary stage, which brought together poets and writers from Ukraine: Irena Karpa (who presented her new novel Good News from the Aral Sea), Yurko Izdryk, Oleksandr Irvanets, Max Kidruk, Dmytro Lazutkin, Ivan Semesyuk, Pavlo Matyusha, Ihor Astapenko, Pavlo Korobchuk, and Oleksandra Hontar. The art director of the festival, Serhiy "Kolos" Martyniuk, presented his novel Captain Sadness. There were also handicrafts areas, mobile and board games, and a nightly Horror Quest.

The discussion was opened by the brotherhood of OUN-UPA veterans. They raised the issues of the initiative "Who ordered Katya Gandzyuk"; waste sorting, eco-packaging and eco-volunteering, preparation and victory of veterans in the Invictus Games, women's volunteer movement, mother tongue, the Ambassador project, and the film "The Invisible Battalion". As a sign of support for the captured sailors who were illegally seized by the Russian military on 25 November 2018 and are being held in the territory of the aggressor country, the festival participants formed a shining anchor figure.

2020-th

2020. The fourteenth festival took place online due to the COVID-19 pandemic on 7-9 August. The bands O.Torvald, BEZ OBMERzhen, KARNA, Tartak, Fiolet, Shadow of the Sun, Kozak System, Entree, PANCHYSHYN, and Ivan Marunych performed. Their performances were broadcast on the festival's YouTube channel and on Promin radio. At the same time, traditional folk music and sporting events were held in the open air for a limited number of visitors. Lesya Ukrainka Park also hosted a public screening of Bandersnatch. It was decided to make the tickets sold in advance valid for the next year's festival.

2021. The festival took place from 6 to 8 August in Rovantsi and was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. The festival featured performances by Boombox, BEZ OBMEZHEN, TNMK, Oleksandr Polozhynskyi, Karna, Zhadan i Sobaki, Sasha Chemerov, Fiolet, Odyn v kanoe, Mad heads, FlyzZa, Heart Attack, Shyroky Lan, Marmur and Tsvyakh.

Serhiy Prysyazhnyi (Motor'rolla), Serhiy Vasylyuk (Shadow of the Sun), Svyatoslav Boyko (Shyrokyi Lan), and Natalia Loseva performed on a separate acoustic stage. There were traditional bands, a children's playground, and the Anna Beira medieval fighting club.

"Bandersnatch was visited by such famous people as writer and musician Serhiy Zhadan, lawyer of the families of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes Yevhenia Zakrevska, journalist and blogger Denys Kazansky, musician, artist, vocalist of the band Ot Vinta! Yuriy Zhuravel, TV presenter, volunteer, president of the Territory A art agency Anzhelika Rudnytska, founder of the Nash Format publishing house Vladyslav Kyrychenko, MP Solomiya Bobrovska, and public figure Serhiy Sternenko, Mariana Savka, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Staryi Lev Publishing House, Serhiy Martyniuk, frontman of the band Fiolet, writer, art director of the Bandershtat festival, Viktor Mandziak, fitness trainer, and others.

A COVID-19 vaccination centre was set up at Bandershtat with the support of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Entrance was free for people with disabilities, combatants and children under 12..

For the first time, the military orchestra of the Lutsk border guard detachment performed at the festival, performing three compositions together with Oleksandr Polozhynskyi.

2022. The sixteenth festival was to take place on 5-7 August in the village of Rovantsi. Due to the full-scale Russian military aggression, it was cancelled. The organisers declared the purchased tickets valid for the next festival.
