Introduction[edit]

Cibali Police Station is a police station located in the Cibali neighborhood of Fatih district.

Details[edit]

The establishment of police stations in Istanbul dates back to the reign of Mahmud II (1808-1839). During that period in the Ottoman Empire, the first police station buildings began to be constructed to ensure the security of both Muslim and non-Muslim populations. One of these police stations was the Cibali Police Station, located next to the Cibali Gate, one of the city walls' gates.[1] Having ensured the security of the Cibali neighborhood for approximately 150 years, the station began serving as a museum after a restoration process that started in 2021 and lasted for two years.[2]

At the entrance of the multi-story museum building, which displays documents, materials, weapons, and photographs related to the history of the Turkish Police, lies the tomb of Cebe Ali, a commander from the era of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, who gave his name to the Cibali neighborhood. Additionally, an 'Anadol' brand police car, which was particularly used by the police force in the 1970s, is also located in the exterior section of the museum.

This police station also inspired a theater play written by Muammer Karaca, with leading roles played by prominent figures of Turkish theater Nejat Uygur and Zihni Göktay, as well as a film starring Cüneyt Arkın. The museum can be visited on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
