The Southern Arizona Diaper Bank(SADB) is a non-profit, Community Benefit Organization that collects and distributes diapers for various charity organizations in southern Arizona. The diaper bank runs off an organizational concept known as community engagement, with a board of directors overseeing the operation in and around the Tucson area. It was founded in 1994 by Hildy Gottlieb and Dimitri Petropolis, who were board members until 2000 when the organization opened its doors as the Southern Arizona Diaper Bank. The organization was founded as a means to provide diapers and other incontinence supplies for babies, disabled and older persons who otherwise cannot afford them.
Organization[edit]
The SADB has a linear organizational structure, where the board of directors and an executive director act as the governing body of the organization, where they are directly influenced by the community they oversee. They use a model of community engagement, as adapted by Gottlieb and Petropolis, to run the entire operation in as self-sustaining a manner as is possible. It is a non-profit organization and falls under the 501(c)(3) statute under American tax law.
Collection[edit]
The SADB has various collection sites around the city of Tucson. These sites, including the diaper bank headquarters, can be located at City Council offices and at various local business sites.
There are also various drives within the community to collect diapers en masse on the bank's behalf.
Distribution[edit]
Collected diapers are handled by the Pima County Health Department and are distributed via their office locations, as well as through the bank's partner agencies.
Community Impact[edit]
The significance of the organization, along with the concept of a diaper bank as a whole, is that it provides goods and services that are not covered by government-aided personal wellness programs such as Welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, Women, Infants and Children, and Foodstamps.
