Dumbrava is a village located in north-western Romania and is part of Căpuşu Mare at the height of 653 meters. In Hungarian it is called Gyerövvásárhely which means Marketplace of Gyerö. The Gyeröfi family was a family of Hungarian counts that ruled over the nearby region between the 16th and 19th century.
Their castle was located behind the cultural center.
This culutral center is built by Kós Károly, a famous architect who also built the Variuvár.
Dumbrava lies north of the international road E60 Bucharest-Budapest. The nearby cities are Cluj-Napoca and Huedin
It has aproximately 400 inhabitants from which aproxametely 40 percent are ethnic Hungarians and the other 60 percent are Romanians or Gypsies.
The village has a lot of legends connected to it. King Matthias was chasing the Turks that had been beaten in a battle nearby. The Turkish sultan had the idea to throw his money out of his treasure chest he was bringing. The Hungarian knights were indeed keen to stop and pick up the money. The king saw he would lose this oppurtinity to give the Turks a finishing blow. He prayed to God to give him this opportunity. God changed the money into stone and Matthias beated the Turks.
Another legend is related with the batlles between the Kuruc and Labanc forces. The villager heard the army was on theri way to kill them. They dug a hole to the north of the city and put wooden logs above it. Above that branches and earth. After they plowed the surrounding field it was not possible to see anything. By doing this the wole village survived.
