Nursalim Yadi Anugerah is a musician and composer from Pontianak, Indonesia. He is known for his creative approach through ideas and discourse about Kalimantan and its relation to socio-cultural issues globally. Nursalim is also the co-founder and director of Balaan Tumaan, an arts institute that focuses on research, archiving and artistic experimentation of culture in West Kalimantan.[1][2]

Career and Work[edit]

Nursalim Yadi Anugerah was born in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. As a composer he produces personal works with multi-style characteristics and collaborates with several artists, both from Indonesia and abroad. He was first recognized through the production of his first chamber opera entitled HNNUNG in Pontianak in 2017, as the recipient of an Innovative Art Grant from the Kelola Foundation.[3] This work was later released in a physical release in the form of a cassette tape and digitally by the Hasana Edition label and received the spotlight as one of The Jakarta Post's best released albums in 2018.[4] Nursalim won an international award as the winner at the 24th International Young Composers Meeting (YCM) 2018 held by Orkest de Ereprijs in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands and received a commission to write a new work entitled Risalah Waktu. Through his work entitled Doa dari Tanah, Nursalim then collaborated with Ernest Zacharevic in 2019 to produce a short film work entitled Rewild which was produced by Studio Birthplace as part of a campaign regarding efforts to reforest the Leuser ecosystem in Sumatra. In 2020, he received a commission to write a new work from the Salihara Arts Center entitled Lawing using six kadedek (mouth-organs of the Dayak tribe in Kalimantan, also known as keluri) which were processed kinetically and digitally by Nursalim and Balaan Tumaan.

Nursalim's works are span around entanglement of environmental and activism.[5] He wrote a cross-cultural opera entitled Ine Aya' (2021) commissioned by Holland Festival in collaboration with opera director Miranda Lakerveld, and cultural figures from the Kayaan Mendalam Community, Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan.[6] A year later the work went on tour in West Kalimantan and Jakarta. Nursalim's latest work entitled Hogespanning (2022) has been premiered by Black Pencil Ensemble at November Music 2022 in the Netherlands.[7][8]
