Signs and Symptoms
Mild: Mild hypothermia is classified as core temperatures between 32°C and 35°C (90°F-95°F).[1] Symptoms of mild hypothermia may be vague, and includes:
- vigorous shivering
- cold white skin
- high blood pressure
- fast heart rate
- fast respiratory rate
- contraction of blood vessels
These are responses the body makes to preserve heat. Increased urine production due to cold, mental confusion, and liver disfunction may also be present.
Moderate: Moderate hypothermia is between 28°C and 32°C (82°F-90°F).[1] As hypothermia progresses, symptoms include:
- mental status changes such as amnesia, confusion
- apathy
- slurred speech
- below normal or absent reflexes
- loss of fine motor skills
Severe: Severe hypothermia is classified as temperatures less than 28°C (82°F).[1] Many severe stage hypothermic patients show the following:
- no shivering
- cold, inflamed skin
- hallucinations
- lack of reflexes
- low heart rate
- low urine output
- fixed dilated pupils
- low blood pressure
- pulmonary edema
At this stage, major organs fail and clinical death can occur.
