The community has on several occasions authorized discretionary sanctions as a general sanction. While the term "discretionary sanctions" most often refers to Arbitration Committee-imposed discretionary sanctions, a parallel set of rules apply to these community-created discretionary sanctions, which are authorized following a community discussion at the administrators' noticeboard.

The earlier versions of these sanctions explicitly specified which arbitration decision the discretionary sanctions were to be modelled on. In later years, as the system of discretionary sanctions became more widely understood and the parallel ArbCom-authorized schemes became more standardized, the community stopped specifying exactly which arbitration decision its sanctions would be modelled on.
