Career

Levine started her career as a reporter in Irish Time at the young age of 15. Following her marriage, Levine and her family migrated to Canada in 1956; initially in Saskatchewan, she worked as a journalist for the Regina Leader-Post. When they settled in small-town Ontario, She was unemployed. But Levine didn't give up her career. Later, she became a member of the National Council of Jewish Women working on human rights campaigns and being involved in the plight of Native Americans. In 1963 Levine worked as an employee at Simpson’s department store while she received treatments from a psychiatrist due to her depression. She returned to journalism in 1965 and was assigned as assistant editor of the Irish Women's Journal. In 1968 she progressed as the editor of the magazine. In 1970 she became one of the founders of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement (IWLM). Where Levine and other feminist members work together to run feminist campaigns. She was well-known as one of the key figures in the 1971 Contraceptive Train Trip, which aimed for contraceptive freedom. Later in March, the IWLM was invited to a special broadcast of RTE’s Late late show, where Levine shared her opinion on women's equality in education, career, government aid and payment. The IWLM activities were eventually disbanded, However, their successes have sparked a new wave of feminist activism in Ireland. In the same year, the ownership of the Irish Women’s Journal changed. She began committing as a freelance journalist, publishing her articles in the Sunday Independent. She also wrote an annual, Irish Beauty. In 1974 Levine worked as a researcher in the Late late show and devoted the whole show to the Irish Women's movement. This was her position until 1978.  Levine has written two books; 'Sisters' (1982) outlined her role in the feminist movements, and (with Lyn Madden) 'Lyn: A Story of Prostitution' (1987). In 1983 she began writing articles for Magill Magazine. Later in life, she became involved in the women's movement in India and published one fiction work, A Season of Wedding, in 1992.
