Dinah Heymans (nee Herbst) was born on 2 February 1967 in Pretoria. Her father is Abie Herbst and her mother is Rina Swart. She attended Primary School in Devon, Messina and Primary School Skuilkrans in Murrayfield, Pretoria.

Dinah attended High School in Zeerust and in Lichtenburg where she matriculated. She first qualified to participate in the South African Junior Athletics Championships in 1984 at the age of 17. Dinah received six distinctions in matric.

After matric Dinah enrolled for a Bachalaureus Pharmaciae degree at the North West University (previously Potchefstoom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE)in Potchefstroom in 1985. She received her B.Pharm. degree with distinction with distinctions in 34 of her 35 subjects over the four year course. She also received the trophy for the best Pharmacy graduate during her course.

Dinah enrolled for her Masters Pharmaciae degree in Pharmacy Practice in 1989 and received her M.Pharm. degree in 1990.

Dinah started working as a pharmacist in Pharmarama Pharmacy in Potchefstroom in 1991. She was transferred to Pharmarama Pharmacy in Gezina, Pretoria in 1993 and joined the South African Military Health Services on 15 April 1994.

Dinah represented PU for CHE in the South African University Athletics Championships during her studies. In November 1991 she jump her personal best of 1,87m at a North West League and won the SA University title in the woman's high jump in December 1991 with a high of 1,83m. The next year she received the bronze medal in the woman's high jump at the South African Senior Athletics Championships with a height of 1,85m. Dinah was also selected to participated in the Olympic trials for the South African team to represent South Africa on the first Olympic Games where South Africa can participate again. In September 1992, Dinah was selected for the African team to participate in a meeting between Africa, Italy and France. In 1995 she was selected to participate in the First Military World Games in Rome, Italy.

Dinah married Wouter Heymans on 29 January 1994 and participated in South African Senior Athletics Championships until 1996, when she stopped doing athletics. She gave birth to a son on 6 May 1997 and a girl on 12 May 1999.

After seeing an invitation to join the Bloemfontein Military Sports Athletics Club in 2001, she starting doing athletics again and started to participate in Masters Athletics Meetings. In her first Masters meeting, she broke the South African and African record for high jump for women 30-34 years of age. Since then she broke all the South African and African records for high jump for women up to the age of 49 years of age.

In 2002 Dinah won the silver medal in the high jump for women at the South African Senior Athletics Championships with a height of 1,80m, with Hestrie Cloete winning the gold medal. A few weeks later she participated in the First African Military Games in Nairobi, Kenya, and won the gold medal in the high jump for women with a African record.

After winning the bronze medal at the South African Senior Athletics Championships in 2003, Dinah participated in the World Masters Athletics Championship in Puerto Rico, where she won the gold medal for high jump for women 35-39 years of age with a height of 1,75m. She also competed in the Third Military World Games in Sicilia, Italy, in the same year.

Dinah participated in the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Jyvaskyla, Finland, in April 2012. She won the gold medal in the high jump for women 45-49 years of age, with a new indoor world record of 1,65m. After the 2012 season she was one of five female athletes nominated for the best female masters athlete in the world for 2012.
