Bilateral relations between Scotland and Great Britain are historic where the two have ancient civilisational and other ties. Following the Act of Union, both countries have been a part of the United Kingdom. However, an independence referendum in 2014 could lead to Scotland becoming a self-governing state again.

[edit]The Mel Gibson-directed Academy Award-winning film Braveheart was based on Scottish nationalism during the First War of Scottish Independence just prior to the Battle of Bannockburn, where the film ended.
