Knox's was a Canadian rock band from Carbonear, Newfoundland, originally formed in 2017 by guitarist and vocalist Noah Green, drummer Devon Mullaly, bassist Zachary Wheadon, keyboardist Anthony Griffin, and guitarist Zachary Murray. The last incarnation of the band consisted of Anthony Griffin as lead vocalist, bassist Noah Burden, and lead guitarist Bruce Smith.

History

[edit]

Early Days

[edit]

Knox's was formed in the basement of Noah Green in the fall of 2017 as a fun project amongst friends. The band wasn't taken seriously by the members and they only ever practiced in Green's basement. Zachary Murray, although an original member, only ever attended one practice and quit the band soon after. The lineup of Green, Griffin, Mullaly, and Wheadon would meet up after school and practice various punk rock songs by bands such as The Front Bottoms and Foster the People. The band's sound was heavily influenced by Green and Mullaly's preferred kind of music.

One evening while practicing, Green coined the name "Knox's", named after a popular local swimming hole called "Knox's Hole" and Griffin taped the name onto the band's drum set with painter's tape. Several attempts were made at group songwriting but the band only ever composed one song together as that lineup. That song was a comedic punk rock song aimed at making fun of the group's friend Logan Clarke.

Hiatus

[edit]

The original incarnation of the band didn't last long and the band had essentially broken up, but that didn't stop Anthony Griffin from pursuing his dreams of having a band. Griffin, who couldn't really play an instrument at all, changed his position to the band's lead vocalist. Along with bassist Zachary Wheadon, the two attempted endlessly to recruit new members to complete the band's lineup. Attempts were made to have Noah Green rejoin the band as lead guitarist and drummer but he wasn't interested. Other guitarists such as Noah Simms and Christian Butt were also offered positions. While in eleventh grade, Griffin managed to recruit Noah Burden as the band's new guitarist.

Nothing happened for a while and only a couple of practices happened with little or no progress. After declining an offer for a position in the band by guitarist David Lee, Lee invited Wheadon and Burden to join his heavy metal band "Disconnect". The two joined Lee's band, leaving Griffin in the dark. Knox's was back at square one.

New Lease on Life

[edit]

In March of 2020 during the Covid-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown in Newfoundland, Griffin and Burden began playing on a Minecraft realm with a mutual friend and her friends. Two of those people were Bruce Smith and Riley Barteau. Griffin, Burden, Smith, and Barteau had several discussions about forming a band and in July finally met for a very productive practice. The newly assembled lineup of Knox's recorded a live take of You Might Think by The Cars, with Griffin on lead vocals, Burden on bass and backing vocals, Smith on lead guitar and vocals, and Barteau on drums.

Another practice was held outside at Griffin's home in the fall of 2020 but it was over just as soon as it started. The group got through half of You Might Think when one of their amps blew. It then proceeded to rain and the members went home. This was the last practice to feature Riley Barteau.

Knox's met most recently in December of 2020 at Smith's home studio in Bay Roberts where they wrote and partially demoed a song titled Foggy Mountain Air. Due to time constraints, they never finished the demo and were back in Covid-19 lockdown shortly after. The band plans to meet again to finish the demo and work on new tunes to prepare for touring.

2021

[edit]

During 2021, the band didn't meet up to practice or record. Despite this, Griffin continued writing songs. In December 2021, Burden acquired a recording device and set up a studio in his apartment in St. John's, which he shares with Griffin and three others. Griffin and Burden plan to record during the winter/spring of 2022, including guitarist Smith, as well as former bassist, Zachary Wheadon.

Legacy

[edit]

Founding member of Knox's, Noah Green, would go on to form the alternative folk band, Wine Drunk with Michael Dwyer and Erica Evely. The trio has released 1 single and 2 EPs as of March 2021. The single Josephine became a local hit around the Conception Bay North area.
