The exhibition area was established in 1929 thanks to the partnership among the municipality of Bari, the provincial administration and the chamber of commerce, and it has been active since then. The first exhibition event took place in 1930. The logo, featuring a ship with unfolded sails, was made by the futuristic painter Thayaht. Since then the exhibition has traditionally taken place in September, except for the years between 1940 and 1946 due to war ravages. The main event of the year boasts about 800 exhibitors and hosts about 200 000 visitors.[1]

1969 saw the birth of special events. The initial exhibition area of about 100 000 m² has been enlarged with time up to the current 300 000 m² where about 40 events are hosted every year. The exhibition has a new structure designated to host conferences.

The main event is the September exhibition. Thanks to the "Stock Exchange", the exhibition promotes contacts between South Central, East European and Mediterranean exhibitors. The exhibitors that participate yearly to the events are over 5000.The visitors are over 2 millions and they come from Europe and Mediterranean basin. The satellite activities of the exhibition grant about 150 millions euros. [2]

On the 7th of November of 2017, the exhibition signed a concession contract with the company Nuova Fiera del Levante S.r.l. for the upgrading and management of the areas of the Exhibition Center owned by the Autonomous Entity Fiera del Levante. The signing of the contract concludes the public tender procedure started in 2014, in execution of the regional law n. 2/2009 and the related implementing regulation no. 25/2013.

Nuova Fiera del Levante S.r.l. is held 85% by the Chamber of Commerce of Bari and 15% by Bologna Fiere S.p.a. and has the concession of part of the Exhibition Centre, where to organize the exhibitions and congresses identified by the regional law.[3]

International vocation[edit]

The main declared objective of the fair is the internationalization of the southern economy, counting on a market made up of the regions of southern Italy, south-eastern Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa. In this regard, the collaboration with Fiera di Bologna S.p.A., which is the industrial partner of Nuova Fiera del Levante S.r.l.[4], as well as holder of 15% of its share capital, is very strategic.[5]

The main initiatives abroad are the "Fiera del Levante in Albania", participation in the Ulma and Essen fairs in Germany, at the international fair in Skopje, in Macedonia, in Tripoli in Libya and in Bucharest in Romania.
