Jonas is a Disney Channel Original Series created by Roger S.H. Schulman and Michael Curtis.[1] The series stars Nick, Kevin, and Joe Jonas as the Lucas Brothers, the three members of the rock band JONAS, as well as Chelsea Staub and Nicole Anderson as members of the band's entourage. John Ducey also stars in the first season as the boys' father, but has yet to appear in the second.

The series' first season took place primarily in the Lucas Brothers' New Jersey home and high school. Recurring characters and guest stars were primarily other students and school faculty. In an attempt to improve ratings, the characters spend the summer in Los Angles in the second season, entitled Jonas L.A..[2] Recurring characters are other Hollywood inhabitants and guest stars include celebrities. Jonas L.A. retains recurring actors Frankie Jonas and Robert Feggans.

Main characters

[edit]

Kevin Lucas

[edit]

Kevin Lucas, played by Kevin Jonas,[3] is the oldest of the three brothers and is usually seen as wacky, wild, and goofy. He often comes up with plans that are insane or impossible but occasionally offers some good ideas. When he lies, his voice tends to be high pitched. He performs back-up vocals, occasional lead vocals and lead guitar for JONAS. He dated a girl from Scandinavia and then from France, suggesting that he likes foreign girls.

While in Los Angeles in Season 2 of the series, Kevin takes an interest in film directing and begins shadowing famous but abrasive director Mona Klein.[4]

Joe Lucas

[edit]

Joe Lucas, played by Joe Jonas,[3] is the middle brother. He sings lead vocals and plays keyboard and rhythm guitar in the band. Joe is known as the teen heartthrob of the group.[citation needed] He tends to be goofier than Nick but not quite as out there as Kevin and always carries a blue panda pencil with him. Joe will go to any lengths to get a girl to like him. Over the course of season 1, Joe's friendship with Stella slowly evolves and, in the episode "Double Date", they kiss.

In Jonas L.A., Joe experiences trouble in his relationship with Stella; Although he says he would like to make their courtship official, Stella, concerned about maintaining a relationship with a rock star, requests they remain platonic friends. Joe develops his interest in acting in Season 2 with a role in actress Vanessa Page's movie.[4]

Nick Lucas

[edit]

Nick Lucas, played by Nick Jonas,[3] sings lead vocals and plays the drums for JONAS. He is the youngest but most serious brother, and his family claims he never smiled even as a baby. He is known to have many short-lived relationships, and his family has criticized him for falling in love too fast. Nick is the most serious of the group, sometimes losing patience with Kevin's antics. Nick is also the mastermind of creative plans gone awry. He is also seen baking many times in the show and Kevin is unable to resist his blue cookies.

In Season 2, Nick develops a relationship with Macy Misa.[4]

Stella Malone

[edit]
Chelsea Staub plays Stealla Malone.

Stella Malone, played by Chelsea Staub, is JONAS's stylist.[3] She is close friends with the brothers, having known them since she was three. As the band's stylist, Stella created an automated outfit selector called the StellaVator and is constantly trying to adapt clothes to JONAS's hectic lifestyle. She gets annoyed when her outfits get ruined, which happens more than she'd like. She is terrible at sports but an excellent seamstress, one time creating a dozen girls' volleyball uniforms in a very short span of time. She is addicted to texting.

Stella and Joe know they like each other but they decide not to date because they don't want to mess up their friendship if they break up, but still considers a romance with him because she gets jealous if she sees Joe with another girl. In a recent episode, Stella might have discarded her feelings for him when she pictures how their relationship might turn out. In the episode "Double Date", she and Joe kiss and soon become a couple.

Development and casting

[edit]

Demi Lovato and Nicole Anderson also auditioned for the role of Stella, but the role eventually went to actress Chelsea Staub.[5] According to Staub, her previous work with director Sean McNamara helped her land the role.[6]

Macy Misa

[edit]

Macy Misa, played by Nicole Anderson, is an enormous JONAS fan and Stella's best friend.[3] She runs a fansite for the band is president of their fan club. In Season 1, Macy is an obsessive and over enthusiastic fangirl; Upon approaching members of the band, she would faint or accidentally hurt them in her excitement. She often refers to each boy as "(first name) of JONAS." With Stella's help, Macy lessens her obsessiveness and develops friendships with the brothers. She is very athletic and plays on a number of sports teams, and also works in her mother's thrift store, called Misa's Pieces. Macy is a terrible singer but has decided not to stop.

In season 2, Macy and Stella accompany the band when they move to Los Angeles for the summer and stay in the brother's guest house. She continues to record and post video blogs for her fansite.[1] Nick becomes attracted to her.[4]

Development and casting

[edit]

Anderson initially auditioned for the role of Stella Malone, but lost the role to Staub.[5] After the series plot changed, producers decided to create a best friend for Stella and offered Anderson the role of Macy.[7]

Tom Lucas

[edit]

Tom Lucas, played by John Ducey, is Joe, Nick, Kevin and Frankie's father and the often-anxious manager of JONAS.[3] He is sometimes the voice of reason when his boys have crushes on girls. In his downtime, he often plays hide and seek with Frankie. Tom is no longer a main character in Season 2.[4]
