The Diacritics War on Wikipedia[edit]

Diacritics (and other foreign languages) in article titles[edit]

Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons "This RfC seeks to clarify BLP naming policy, particularly as regards diacritics. It is proposed to:

  • (0) add a new section "Accurate naming" to the top, and add the following items to it:
  • (1) "English Wikipedia should be a trustworthy reference to majority usage in reliable English-language sources. Use POV-neutral Internet research tools to research such majority usage". (Note 1)
  • (2) (a) "The article title should reflect such majority English usage, as per WP:AT. If this is not the case, either rename the article, or clearly indicate majority English usage—e.g. by a statement in the lede such as better known in English as...".
  • (b) "In any case, the subject's common name should be on top of the infobox, as per MOS:INFOBOX".
  • (3) "Where possible, the article should be linked to the corresponding foreign-language Wikipedia BLP article". (Note 2)
  • Note 1: (a) Sample list of BLP reference sources and (b) the two sample Google search templates that make it trivial to do research, plus examples.
  • Note 2: Description of procedure for finding foreign-language article (this too could be a Google search template), plus examples.
