Miuccia Prada[edit]

Miuccia Prada born May 10, 1948 in Milan, Italy. goes by her nickname 'Miu Miu.' Miuccia Prada is a world reknowned Italian fashion designer. Prada is known for her brute beauty standards and her "anti-fashion-fashion" stance when it comes to intersecting fashion, art, technology and media. Prada has pioneered many emerging styles, concepts and trends both into the realm of fashion and art. Her success is unprecedented and is considered one of the most influential fashion stylist to date. Prada, the main brand has subsidiary brands that are largely owned by Prada: Miu Miu, Church's, Car Shoe, Pasticceria Marchesi and Luna Rossa.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Miuccia Prada Born Maria Bianchi took the family name Miuccia Prada in the 1980s, after been adopted by an aunt. Her biological parents were Luigi Bianchi and his wife, Luisa Prada. She trained at Teatro Piccolo to become a mime and performed for five years. Later in her life she became a member of the Italian Communist Party that involved situating the women's rights movement during the seventies in Milan. In 1978 she entered into her family's business of bag making and was taken under the wing of her grandfather, Mario Prada. She then met her current husband and business partner, Patrizio Bertelli and had two sons. Mario Prada, her grandfather was the founder and original designer of the fashion label Prada that was founded in 1913. Prada's background with the Italian communist party and at Teatro Piccolo enabled her to see the important of the way clothing and textiles exist in the world.

Work[edit]

In 1984, Miuccia Prada designed her first successful handbag named 'the Vela'. The backpack has acclaimed Prada its sought after status today amongst people Anna Wintour, Selena Gomez, Dakota Fanning, Marc Jacobs, Uma Thurman, Claire Danes, Lily Collins, Baz Luhrmann, Alexa Chung, Ava DuVernay, Katherine Langford, Sasha Lane, and Chloë Sevigny and many more who have all been spotted wearing exclusive Prada pieces on the red carpet. The backpack was a nylon water resistant "pacone" military grade material that was both fashionable, durable and practical; later becoming a cult favorite amongst different demographics of people. Later in 1989, Prada designed her first ready-to-wear collection, which has gotten critical acclaim at the time since very interesting fabrics were being used at the time in comparison to other designers of that era. Prada's sister brand Miu Miu was introduced in 1982 and is based off Miuccia's nickname and holds the title of being a more juvenile brand meant for a younger demographic, Miu Miu is supposed to contradict Prada's more mature audience. Both hold quarterly ready-to-wear shows, while Prada features a menswear collection each season that Miu Miu does not. Her husband, Bertelli is responsible for the retail and commercial side of Prada's business strategy. Since its inception, Miuccia and her husband have turned Prada into a conglomerate that has major shares in several labels.

  • In 2005, she was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People
  • In 2006, she was appointed "Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" by the French Ministry of Culture
  • In 2012, she, along with designer Elsa Schiaparelli, was the subject of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition, "Impossible Conversations"
  • In December 2013, she was awarded the first International Designer of the Year at the 2013 British Fashion Awards. In 2014, she was listed as the 75th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes
  • In November 2015, she received the WSJ Magazine Fashion Innovator of the Year award.
  • In December 2015, she received the highest honorary title of the Order of Merit of the Republic, the title of Knight of the Grand Cross.
  • In 2016, she won Glamour USA's Woman of the Year Award.
  • The Fondazione Prada, a modernist exhibition space co-chaired by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli since 1995, that has become an institution dedicated to exploring contemporary art and culture.
  • Special international projects by the Fondazione include "Double Club" by Carsten Höller in London,] "Prada Transformer" by OMA in Seul and "24h Museum" by Francesco Vezzoli at the Palais d’Iéna in Paris.
  • One of the museum's first exhibits was a large collection of works by Edward Kienholz. The exhibition included Five Car Stud, an installation that had not been available for public view
  • On 4 February 2016, "Goshka Macuga: To the Son of Man Who Ate the Scroll" opened to the public - developed by artist Goshka Macuga for Fondazione Prada’s spaces, it brings together reflections on seminal issues such as time, beginnings and endings, collapse and renewal.
