The New Media Writing Prize awards new media writing in the English language. The prize was launched in 2009 with a Main Prize category and a Student category; a Journalism category was added in 2016, and the Opening Up category incorporating a public vote was added in 2020. The focus of the prize is works that are created "specifically for delivery and reading/viewing on a PC or Mac, the web, or a hand-held device such as an iPad or mobile phone": the focus is on digitally-enabled elements such as interactivity and multimedia.[1] Main Prize winners have included well-known electronic literature authors including Christine Wilks, Tender Claws, and J.R. Carpenter.[2]

History

[edit]

The New Media Writing Prize began in Bournemouth, Dorset, UK in 2010 as part of the Poole Literary Festival.[3][4] Festival organizer and artist Sue Luminati and Bournemouth University lecturer in Media and Communication James Pope created the prize. At that time, electronic literature was known within academic circles and created by university-based artists; Luminati and Pope sought to explore what the wider artistic community was creating in terms of born-digital literature.[5]
